C How to Program Paperback – Illustrated, 25 Dec. 2015

Deitel & Deitel's How To Program C++ 8/E gives the reader a comprehensive grounding in all aspects of the language, from syntax to application. The book is well written and well laid out, with clear and precise definitions of key concepts along with illustrative code examples and self-review exercises to test your understanding of each subject. Classes and UML are both introduced early in the book, and there is a logical progression from one subject to the next. The chapter introducing new features of C++0x and Boost is also a welcome addition.This is a not a book for advanced developers however; subjects such as multiple inheritance are given fairly short shrift, near the end of the book, so I would recommend supplementing C++ How To Program with books by the likes of Meyers and Sutter. It also focuses exclusively on the core components on the language (including an introduction to STL), so you shouldn't expect to learn anything here about multithreading, for example, or socket programming.The only real criticism I have of the book are that a/ it's a little bloated - I feel the information presented could have been condensed without sacrificing comprehensibility and b/ answers to some exercises are only available to instructors and you must prove credentials as an instructor in order to obtain them - as a software professional, I find it frustrating not to have access to this information. These quibbles aside, I would have no problem recommending C++ How To Program as a primer for the language.

PS I am updating my score from one to four (!!!) as later chapters of the book are really well written compared to any other book on the market and I have seen almost all of them. Still too sad that Pearson does NOT provide with a Student Manual.//I bought this book recently & book itself is good enough for a good understanding of several aspects of OOP/C++ and procedural programing.However, for studying any computer language exercises and solutions to these exercises are needed. Unfortunately Publisher of the book did NOT provide me with any of the promised products in this book (I bought International edition as at present I am based outside of the US).Therefore,a) If buying US edition of the book please be aware that you will NOT be provided with any promised Students Solutions Manual.b) If buying International Edition of the book please be aware that you will NOT be provided with any promised additional chapters to the book, solutions manual, and "online notes" (in which you mainly will listen what is already written in the book).Hence, I strongly advise you to check all of these with Publisher before buying the book.For more information please visit Publisher's website, under resources click Students Resources, then Online Companion, & Students Solutions manual and you will see that Students Solutions Manual is NOT available for US edition. For International you can see that no Online companion is available at all.These remarks are for 8th US and International editions of the book.

I read the fourth edition a long time ago, and it taught me a lot about a C++. Sure there were some not recommended practices (that's why I remove one star), but still the book packed a lot of good information, reviews, exercises and resources. Maybe it deserved 4.5 stars, it was great value for price. It will keep you reading for a while (it took me 3 months to read it).
