Yes, it spins at I think 2 speeds with sounds. My 2-1/2 YO grandson still loves having a washing machine at grandma's house. When he's home and we Facetime, he says "grandma, wash-machine" so I have to let him see me put the detergent in and turn it on! I don't think any child would be disappointed with this toy washer :)

Q: Does it work with American Girl dolls?

This washer would be a good size for American Girl dolls and her clothes. It does not really wash them or get them wet, but the sounds are realistic and my grandchildren love playing with it.

Oh, NO! No water, just simulated sounds and 2 spin speeds. Not helpful for real camping washing. (such a late response is probably too late, sorry)
