Outstanding new tele-zoom for general landscape and travel photography.
You don't buy a lens like this for fast action or creamy out-of-focus backgrounds. There are specialist lenses - all larger, heavier and more expensive than this new Nikkor zoom - that will do these things for you. A lens like this is a general purpose lens, ideally suited to travel and landscape photography, which is what I bought it for. Such a lens needs to be small enough and light enough that you'll have it with you when you need it, and good enough to substitute for those specialist lenses for general use at middle and small apertures. I'm happy to report that my sample does exactly this - and then some. It has terrific sharpness throughout the whole zoom range. There is just a hint of softness in the extreme corners wide open, but nothing to be concerned about. Stop it down a bit, and the image quality is outstanding across the frame. Colour, contrast and depth rendition are all excellent, perhaps not quite at the level of the very best lenses, but really very impressive. Build quality is decent, with none of the cheapness that can afflict prosumer grade lenses. The new AF-P motor is quick and accurate. Apparently, focus resets to infinity on wake-up on older bodies, so you should check compatibility with your camera (this hasn't bothered me at all on my D810). Nikon has been on a roll lately with its lenses, and this new zoom is another excellent lens. Highly recommended.

Excellent quality
This lens is excellent value for money. It is lightweight, autofocus is super quick and image quality is first class. Ok it isn’t as fast as the 70-200mm f2.8, but it is a lot cheaper and much lighter at 680g compared to 1430g. It has the added benefit of the extra reach, so for my style of shooting, it ticks all the boxes. I use it for intimate landscapes and outdoor shots of our pet dog in action and it works really well. I accept that the 70-200mm f2.8 is better for indoor sports, but apart from that, I think this 70-300mm is just fine for most needs and am quite happy with image quality on my Nikon D850.Highly recommended.

Excellent Zoom Lens
Great medium length zoom lens. The lens is sharp, quick to focus, has good image contrast, and minimal distortion. The VR works a treat, I can easily handhold this lens at 1/60th second at 300mm, and it's not too heavy to carry. I bought this and the 24-85mm to replace a 28-300mm super zoom lens which was not sharp enough for me. A very good decision. Anyone thinking of buying this lens, just buy one if your camera is compatible with Nikon P type lenses.

Works well with Nikon D3500 body
Excellent lens. Image quality at maximum zoom, hand-held, is excellent with the vibration reduction switched on. Auto focus is almost instant and silent. I use the lens on a Nikon D3500 body (i.e. full frame lens projecting onto an APS-C sensor), which works a treat.

Fast smooth autofocus
I use this lens with my Nikon Z6 (and FTZ convertor). It works superbly, the autofocus is fast and silent. The Z6 has vibration reduction built-in to the body, so I don't really need the VR feature of this lens. I'm told that they work together, and certainly the results have been very impressive, even at the 300mm end of the range. The lens does seem a bit long when attached with the FTZ converter, but I suppose the older Nikon bodies had the mount further forward anyway, so the overall length when attached to the Z6 is probably comparable. The zoom ring is smooth and easy to use. I'm very pleased with this lens.
