Q: why is this so much cheaper than the other Autograph models?

This is a compact model, hence the cheaper price. However, although cheaper than other art projectors it is still works well and is suitable for artists of all abilities. Hope this helps.

Q: Can you place a tablet or phone on the base plate and project from the images on the tablet screen?

The phone screen and the light from the bulb would cancel each other out so you would not get a clear image, if any. It is recommended to print the image out and place that under the projector. A very dark room will produce the best results.

Q: Does this require alight box as shown in "frequently bought together",is it needed?

NO. It comes self contained. Downsides are a) 5" x 5" max copy size. b) the focussing is really crude: sliding. However, it works. I paid about UKL 18.00 for one of thease about 2 years ago. UKL18.00 was a good price. To have to pay what is currently being advertized on Amazon is IMO a total ripoff. This item is nothing more or less than a simple epidiascope: You can make one at home for buttons.
