Q: I prefer the large size for women in hardware and grocery stores for comfort; I don't like them to be hard to take off or put on; is this too big?

I have large hands; these are the best gloves I have EVER found; easy to get on and off, big ENOUGH but not too big. I think you'll be happy with them.....I'm getting ready to buy more pairs "to stock up." Good luck.

They're huge. I bought them for my husband for unclogging drains and working On messy stuff. They fit him fine, they're not tight fitting and easy to put on and take off. He usually wears L or XL motorcycle gloves (depending on material and thickness) if that's a good indication for you

Assuming you don't accidentally puncture them with a sharp object, it is the sweat ("perspiration"), oils and dead skin cells from your hands that make reusable household gloves smell, degrade faster and not last as long as they otherwise would. However, if you wear a thin pair of cotton gloves (like the ones folks use to handle jewelry, precious antiques etc. which are readily available on Amazon) underneath the latex/vinyl/nitrile rubber household gloves then (1) you can hand wash dishes with close to boiling water (2) the household gloves will last much longer (3) the household gloves will not become stinky (4) you can launder the cotton under-gloves on gentle cycle and re-use them many times. Hint: buy one-size larger household gloves than you normally do, to make it easier to get them on over the cotton under-gloves.
