You should be fine with an XL but you may enjoy the extra room of a 2XL. It is very easy to exchange for a different size if you are not happy with the fit.

I'm thinking a 2x large or you could measure one of his long sleeve shirts according to size chart and get an idea that way. Hope this helps this is a very solid hoodie and very warm.
