Swept Clear
The Duncurins were at a large garden centre. My wife pointed to the row of patio-cleaning products and I knew what was about to come next. Our natural-stone patio is the bane of our lives. It sits there, a dark and discoloured mess. Of course, we pressure wash it but it really makes little difference. We have tried a succession of jet washers including hiring one and a couple of years ago I bought from Amazon what is said to be the most powerful mains-powered jet washer. Sadly, although this did have some impact just doing it was exhausting as you have to use the most powerful nozzle and hold it very close in order to make any progress and this means the ‘swept area’ is very small and tends to be streaky. It takes an age. It kills your back. It really is exhausting. I was thinking I’d have to buy a petrol-powered model and had started to scout one of these out on Amazon. The other point, before I forget, is that the patio is under a couple trees and these contribute to the black sticky mess and more importantly when it rains the surface becomes very, very slippery and, without exaggeration, a danger to life and limb. So much so, if it is at all wet, we used to have to warn visitors and always make sure our public liability insurance, I kid you not, is up to date.Anyway, coming back to the rack of cleaning agents. I pointed to the £9.99 special but my wife had espied the one for just under £40 for 2l. The assistant, sensing a like-minder person went on how effective it was and although my wife was sold – I paid.To be fair, she insisted on trying it as soon as we got home. We used a tray and roller rather than any sort of spray as it really is nasty stuff. Don’t roller it too vigorously as it will spray up and you don’t want this. You need a thick ‘dousing’ coating. Wear wellies, mask, rubber gloves and use a long pole on your roller, goggles too if you have them.Well, it worked wonders and we saw a colour that we had not seen for years – since it was new. It was also clean, dry and stable and not at all sticky. You need to wait for the bleach, which is its main component, to dry and we left it overnight before jet washing it again. It looked amazing and we also felt really pleased and ‘uplifted’ would not be too strong a word to use. Trouble is, there was only enough for about two thirds of our patio.I knew that I’d find it on Amazon and I saw similar products including this one from Spear and Jackson which is much cheaper and provides 5l. It was delivered in no time. I used the same method as above with the same precautions. Please note it is important to jet wash your patio before you start in order to remove dirt and ever-present bird poo. The nice thing is that it does not have to be the do-or-die, really dig in and do it - sort of jetting action; you can sit back a bit use a wider nozzle and this will be enough. This makes it quicker, easier and not in any way exhausting. Then allow it to dry then apply your wonder liquid. Both options are excellent. The Spear and Jackson 5l was used on the remaining third of the patio and I used it till it had gone. I also did the two steps which we have and the low wall cappings. I suspect although it is very good, the original Patio Black Spot Remover, available from Amazon for a similar price to the garden centre is superior. To be fair, the first two thirds were jetted a little more vigorously than the final third on which we used the Spear and Jackson offering but nevertheless the first product seemed to cut through it all effortlessly and gave us our patio back. This is the one we will buy again. Please see some pics of work in progress and the three products we used. The Patio Black Spot Remover, The Spear and Jackson 5l and the Sika stone protector as previously reviewed (to finish things off nicely). Good luck at reclaiming your patio.

Very good
This is a very good product. First coat has not got rid of all black spots but brought up most of the stone well. Another application may be needed but it does say that on the bottle. Very expensive. Smells like strong bleach. I wore goggles and gloves !

Excellent. Very effective
Better than expected and very good value. It cleaned the patio dreaded black marks very well along with general cleaning effect. I’d say only leave it on for 2 hours or monitor after this as it can have a bleaching effect if kept too long. Overall I totally recommend this. It was enough to do both our patios. Great product

Product bought just for black spot but did not work as well as their regular cleaner

Not strong enough.
I had my patio professionally cleaned with another black spot removal product. Strong smell of bleach and some dead grass but the result was immaculate. I bought this Spear and Jackson product to clean some spare slabs and it did nothing. Even after using it neat and leaving it overnight and then pressure washing, the black spots remained. Waste of time.

Super easy, works great!
Worked fantastic! The patio at my new property had been badly neglected. Even after pressure washing it it was left with lots of ugly black spots. Scrubbed this on with a broom and left for a few hours before rinsing down. Almost all of the marks are gone. Fantastic, it looks like new!

Effective product
Removed black spots from flagstones with one application when other products had failed.Only issue is a faulty cap on the bottle. I had to cut it off with a Stanley knife then decant the rest into milk bottles.

Actually works.
This cleaner is very good. My 15 year old basic stone patio has been getting worse and worse every year despite regular pressure washing. I have always steered clear of using an expensive product but I sprayed this on as directed and you can immediately see it fizzing up. After two hours I rinsed it off with a normal hose and you can see little black bits floating away. Whilst it has not removed all the spots it has lifted the dirt amazingly and my patio is now a pale grey again instead of a grubby looking dark grey. Fantastic. I shall definitely use every Spring if necessary. Now the year after I wrote this. No blackSpots have returned over winter and patio seems to be getting cleaner and cleaner all the time. I also used a mould and mildew remover.
