The Cambridge Ancient History Volume 7, Part I: The Hellenistic World is an invaluable text for any serious student of the period. Edited by Walbank and Astin it covers the general history of the period from the death of Alexander to the point where Rome was about to enter the Hellenistic east as a major player. The coverage of Macedonia by Walbank is particularly good as are the sections on science, warfare, townplanning and other specialized topics.
