WOODRIVER Pure Tung Oil Quart

Q: I want to use this on old rough lumber from my roof. I want to keep lumber original w/o a noticeable sheen. Does the finished surface have a sheen?

It shouldn't have a sheen, particularly with a rough surface-(smooth surfaces have a beautiful soft matte sheen after buffing). Test a corner to see how it changes the color (may deepen a little). See how it dries without buffing, whether it will feel tacky, though you could lightly sand the surface you will touch between coats.

Q: Do you know if this is food safe? Can I use it on my cutting board?

Pure tung oil (like this one) is food safe once completely cured (hardening oil), but it can take weeks to do the three coats and cure. I wouldn’t use it on a cutting board because simple mineral oil and/or beeswax products work better for cutting boards. Also, when the oil hardens in the wood, it might make the wood less knife friendly. I’m going to use tung oil for a non-toxic finish for wooden handles, because it leaves a more natural wood feel to the wood than coatings. And as a non-toxic way to finish small wood projects around the house.
