Dobro Hound Dog
I absolutely love the sound I get from this instrument. I did have to cut down the slots in the nut and drop the bridge considerably but when I finished, one of the members of my group said it played like "butter - better than some $5000 guitars" he's had. That, I don't fault Dobro for as in manufacturing mass production they err on the side of caution and it's not too hard to modify to play well. The one exception I do have with the product is the pickup. I got the instrument a couple of nights before a gig and had not plugged it in until we set up - it sounded pathetic and nothing we tried improved it much. So I ordered a schatten RG-03A Series Pickup and it sounds fabulous. I would not recommend anyone doing this however because this Schatten device is too long to clear the cone inside the guitar and I had to seriously modify the case thus exposing the electronics. But it would take a seriously fantastic instrument for me to consider trading it. But I would suggest getting a pickup with a shorter set of electronics to clear the cone but I would make sure it has the device sealed but suspended inside the cone as the pickup then has its own mini-echo chamber thus capturing the pure sound.I should note that I also constructed a matching wood wrist rest over the bridge which provides me a great anchor location allowing me to use a full travis pick on some extremely fast bluegrass songs. All in all a pure delight to play and is very attractive.

Versatile Dobro
This was an open box purchase from the amazon.com warehouse that arrived in mint condition for half the price. Great sounding and versatile dobro for blues slide and finger style bluegrass. I believe the deluxe version of the Hound Dog is worth the extra money for the attractive aesthetics upgrade and Fishman internal pickup. The pickup is more than adequate but it is essential to take the plate off and adjust the pressure on the pickup nut according to the Fishman site instructions (full turn past plate contact) or it will lose clarity and resonance. As with most Chinese products, the quality control is random but well worth the saving and makes it possible for one to purchase a quality guitar that would otherwise be out of reach.

MADE IN CHINA vs MEXICO....I'LL TAKE MEXICO
RECIEVED GUITAR LUCKILY WITH NO DAMAGE AS IT WAS PACKAGED IN THE ORIGINAL BOX WITH NO ADDITIONAL PACKAGING DONE. THE GUITAR WHEN TAKEN FROM THE SHIPPING BOX HAD MISC MATERIAL INSIDE THE INSTRUMENT. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUITES OF SHAKING , A PIECE OF WOOD FELL OUT. ANOTHER 20 MINUITES LATER, A SMALL 4-40 LOCKNUT FELL OUT. THERE STILL APPEARS TO BE SOME SMALLER PARTICLES IN THE RESONATOR CONE. I THINK THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR THE PRICE, EVEN IF IT WAS MADE IN CHINA. I HOWEVER CHOSE TO KEEP THE ITEM AS I BELIEVE "LET THE BUYER BEWARE" THE FIT AND FINISH ARE GOOD, ILL FEEL BETTER AFTER I GET IT TUNED AND CHECK THE SOUND......

Disgrace to the Dobro name
Gibson sold this iconic brand name to low quality Chinese manufacturing under the Epiphone name. They don't even make a square neck model. It makes me sick to see what has become of this instrument and it's legacy.

Very pleased so far...
Bought this guitar recently, and I have to say that I really don't have much experience with other resonator guitars beyond listening to them. Since I play slide in open tunings, I feel like they have a superior sound for that style. This one felt like a pretty safe bet being a Dobro brand. It is made in China, which is a bummer, but seems well constructed. The body is thick, and solid feeling. The matte finish and wood grain look great. It has a very antique look about it. The action from the shop was set pretty nice, frets easily, yet the slide doesn't bang around on the frets. The first thing I did was drop some heavier strings on it, which really made a difference in the sound quality over the factory strings- that usually goes without saying I suppose. I like having the pickup on it as well, sounded really good on just a cheap fender frontman amplifier. I'm definitely not an expert, I've never even touched a National, so I don't have much to make comparisons to, but I'm pretty well pleased with the sound and construction upon my purchase.
