Super smooth spindle movement with great precision
This is an exceptional spindle sander that cost 2 to 3 time what some of the plastic for home use sanders cost. This is a professional tool that is very heavy, 77 lbs and is made from Steel, has steel gears, along with several precision steel spindles of various sizes.Table is large and flat and adjusted 90 degrees to the spindle, perfect right out of the box.The powder coating in the storage slots does need to be widened slightly to accept the disc but it is like 20 seconds to run a smoothing file or a flat sanding stick in each slot to adjust the fit to your liking. The dust collection is outstanding if you install a baffle in the front of the machine to close off the open area. I just used a scrap piece of foam and cut two slot for the table bolts and what. difference, without it, the dust collection is just ok, lot of dust is left on the table with the front completely open.I didn't take any pic with the before and after sanding but there was a good amount of router bit burning marks on the cherry and maple as you might expect, along with ridge lines from the cutter. I am super pleased with the sanders ability to remove these marks and smooth end grain like glass, even in those nearly impossible to reach inter corners, that are perfect. Any marks in photos are not burn marks but in the wood itself. The spindle speed on the Jet is listed as 1400 rpm, compared to 2000 or more for some of the less expensive competitors. This is important as it result in less heat and burning. Also the vertical movement of the spindle, about 1 inch, compared to 5/8 for most less expensive models. The movement of the oscillating spindle is much slower and controlled than other sanders, with 30 vs 58 cycles per min. slower means less heat, more control of the piece.Yes there are many cheaper alternative to the Jet Spindle Sander but if you want a professional tool capable of professional result, this is the ticket.

Great benchtop sander
I bought this specifically for making new toe rails for my boat, but before that project begins I've used it for some other tasks. Most recently, a new boom crutch which has a curved cutout where the boom rests. This sander made it easy to finish what the bandsaw started, as well as rapid passes to finish the flat surfaces that had been hand planed. For finishing purposes, the sander seems to have plenty of power. I've only worked with Honduran mahogany so far, which isn't exactly the hardest wood. The spindles are easy to install. A prior review stated that the spindle storage holes didn't permit actually placing the spindles into them -- I had no such issue. The table is flat and the inserts fit flush. I have not yet connected dust collection, so have no opinion on that yet.I'm very glad to have added it to my bench, and see it being very useful in addition to my disc and belt sander.

Well built Quality machine.
Perfect size for my small shop and is a pro machine on a smaller scale. Does everything I need it to do. Great for sanding inside curves on small boxes or scroll saw cuts.. I had a cheaper one and it didn’t hold up. This one is heavy duty and my money says it will last along time.

Not packaged sufficiently.
Ordered it a few days ago and received it today. It was delivered by UPS. Noticed a few dings and dents on the box and a small split on one corner of the box. I carefully removed the sander from the box and the Styrofoam on the bottom of the sander came out in pieces. It looks like a beautiful machine and I was very anxious to use it, however, after inspecting the unit, found the bottom front corners were deformed with many cracks at all four corners. The sander is relatively heavy, about 80 lbs. The Styrofoam packaging does not seem to be sufficient. The sander should be strapped to a pallet and shipped by a common carrier. I have read many reviews where the individuals have experienced the same issue. I am going to package it with what was left of the Styrofoam and return it to Amazon and see if I can get one that is not damaged. Once I get a undamaged sander and have an opportunity to use it I will rerate the sander. I know this is not fair to Jet to give it this rating. This should probably be directed to Amazon or UPS.

Love it.
For the past forty years I have wanted a spindle sander. Admittedly, it isn't a tool that I use every day, but on the other hand, there is no other tool which does what a spindle sander does. The cast iron table is flawless. I have read other reviews which indicated that the throat plate inserts did not come up to the top of the cast iron table, leaving a slight depression, but mine is absolutely flat. There is tons of power. It is quiet and smooth. The table top tilts easily to 45 degrees which is a nice feature. My only quarrel is that the unit is TALL. When placed on top of the work bench, the working height is way too tall for most people. I have had to make a custom cart with a lower top height so that when this unit is placed on top the working height is more easily reached. As others have commented, including the 3" spindle and insert would have been nice. However, the quality of this machine is striking. The fit and finish is equal to any high end tool. I am very happy with this unit and having it in my shop makes an almost impossible job a joy to perform now.
