how many cords can you plug in to this box and can this be hung up or does it just sit on the ground

I think people have answered the question (large and medium - 1 in 4 out). What's different about the large and the medium is that the large will more comfortably accommodate more power trips at the bottom. That said, I doubled up a few of the "out" slots with well insulated outdoor extension cords. I checked every week the first two week and they never got hot. I'm sure that's not according to hoyle but it worked for Christmas

I would need to bury this in the ground about a foot deep. Would this box handle that?

That is a different type of application. A direct burial electrical box is something that protects buried splices and connections from the elements. And the cover is still accessible. This is simply a plug strip protector. Not water tight.

Is there any way to attach the box to something so that someone can't just walk off with it?

You can use Zip-ties to semi-secure it to a post. Some should be included but they are merely to secure the top to the bottom. It just depends upon the security level you want/need. Remember, this boxes are PLASTIC.....
