what is the difference between paddle brush and flat brush? Thanks.

The handle is a paddle? The width and lenght of the brush hairs on a paddle brush can make a difference on managing the acrylic paint. Its a matter of preference. I decided to try it and it was a great decision i made to cover large areas with acrylic paint. I don't know how it will work with other mediums, but it works well with acrylics.

Does this brush shed?

It helps to know which brush you meant since there are several products clumped together on this listing. The splatter brush doesn't shed but the ferrule is loose and wobbly on 2 I've received so far. Disappointed in the quality considering I've trusted the Liquitex brand over 50 years.

Is this a soft brush, or a harder bristle designed to create bristle brush strokes?

It is a stiffer bristle brush, but not as stiff as hog hair. It is designed for applying large areas of color or varnish. Unless the paint/varnish is very thin, it is likely that you will produce brush strokes/streaks with it.

Would this brush be good for applying varnish to wood furniture?

I suppose it would. It has great coverage, but is more of an artist brush. It holds paint very well.
