Q: Do I need a thermostat controller or will it be okay without one?

If you use this for seeds starting you don’t need one. The temperature stays constant which seedlings need to propagate. I have chives and strawberries breaking through the soil now and I’m starting to go in with my tomatoes next. Good luck Barry

Q: do you leave this mat on 24/7 ? I am not sure if it would be dangerous to leave it on while i am sleeping or away from home. thank you.

We do leave ours on. Have smoke detectors. Not sure about 'official instructions' though. I think they say something along the lines of 'don't leave them unattended', which seems impractical for most people. We've left them on 24/7 during seed sprouting times without incident, but you have to make your own decisions about this.
