Excellent cutter!
This is a great product for cutting large amounts of paper or making edges of handmade books flush in a small amount of time~ I worked in a print shop for 3 years, so I do have background knowledge about using industrial cutters like this and I love this cutter! It's very accurate when you line up your paper and stack it just right. Any slight off cuts or inaccuracy I got was due to human error or improper jogging of the paper, but once I lined up and tried again, the cut was straight every time. I was always taught in the printing business to put a scrap piece of paper/cardstock on top and bottom of your stack so when you cut, any frayed edges or possible grease residue (if any) are left on the scrap pieces and your stack is left flush and clean. This is still a heavy piece, especially near the front of where the blade is so be very careful when lifting. Other than that, I would recommend this to anyone doing home business work, crafting handmade books, or for cutting thick study guide books for college courses, etc.

Please Read This!
Because this paper cutter had decent reviews I took a chance on it. When it arrived it would not cut. I am not mechanically inclined, so even though they included many troubleshooting ideas, I wasn’t about to mess with it. It didn’t work like other buyers had stated in their reviews and I knew there was something wrong. It would not even cut 5 sheets of paper (let alone 400!!) Also, it appeared used and repackaged. There were paper scraps, as if someone had cut paper with it. I’m thinking maybe it was returned, and Amazon put it back on the shelf and it was sent out again inadvertently. (I hope it wasn’t deliberate!) So I returned it, which was a big pain in the butt because it weighs a ton. And because of this experience I almost gave up on this cutter. But on a whim, I ordered another one and it did everything the reviews said. It cuts through just about anything, even a pile of cardboard! And it cuts like butter. I am so glad that I didn’t throw in the towel and took a chance by ordering a replacement. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Solid cutter for basic work
Pretty solid. It's heavily built and has very little wobble in the parts. I bought it for book-binding; to cut perfect-bound books. I'm a fairly large guy, so it may be a little bit harder to get this to cut through a full 400 sheets of paper like it claims if you're a smaller person, but it takes very little effort whatsoever to cut through a big stack to begin with and I doubt most people will have a problem. It's also about 3-4 times faster than cutting things by hand, even for the same amount of paper. I can cut about 3 1/2 books with this in the time it used to take me to do 1 when cutting the edges with a knife. By far, the cost is more than justifiable in the time you save with this thing. The paper guide that comes built in is more of a nuisance than a help in my opinion because of how tightly it's attached to the slider bar, but it's easily removable with a single screw. I found it easier to cut myself a wooden L-shaped block on a table saw that I just hold behind the paper to get it in place and then place my hand on the paper while cutting. This is probably more related to my specific use of the cutter than anything else, so I wouldn't classify it as a major design flaw. The only significant downside to this cutter is it's lack of accuracy. This is not a fine-cut tool, and I would not even begin to suggest you use it for anything like photo matting, where pinpoint accuracy and perfect 90 degree angles are a necessity. It cuts straight and cleanly, but there's a distinct margin of error for about 1/32", even with practice, and on larger stacks of paper it has a tendency for the blade to want to wander a bit off of straight down, leaving you with a stack that's up to 1/8" difference in sheet length from top to bottom. You can mitigate that with a bit of practice, but this isn't meant to be the most precise of tools.

Great paper cutter!!
I have been struggling with digitizing my books for the past year. It has been a very tedious process pulling all the pages out by hand from the bindings, trimming 10 pages at a time at the most in a typical paper cutter, and then having difficulty scanning because of the often irregular sizes of the pages. I bought this paper cutter in the hopes that I could get more than one book per day finished. This is a wonderful device, and it has totally solved my digitizing problem. It slices the bindings right off of hardbound and paperback books so easily, and because the pages are uniform in size, scanning is a breeze. The only drawback with the paper cutter is that with thick soft bound books there can be some shifting of the pages as the blade comes down resulting in uneven cutting at times. However, this is not generally a big problem. The one complaint that I have is that there are virtually no instructions which accompany this paper cutter.. I did not understand exactly how it worked when I first got it so it was frustrating initially getting it set up. I did e-mail the company directly with a question, however, and they did respond right away. So, it you are used to usual paper cutters, this one may take a little getting used to. Also, make sure you have the box oriented according to the picture on the box when you unpack it. It is very heavy, and the weight is unbalanced towards the side with the blade. All that aside, I am extremely pleased with the way it works..

Virtually effortless!
Initially we bought this for cutting some brochures that we print regularly. But another use quickly came apparent to us. We had these old books in inventory, that got some water damage or bug poop from being in storage for years. They are paperback about an inch and a half thick. The damage was really only on the page edges. Discoloration and or termite poop or something. After trimming these down, the sides look brand new and instead of discarding these, we can sell them as imperfect. Please forgive the shaky video, as ideally I would want to use two hands to operate this. About the actual cutter: It's really sturdy. I haven't experienced any build quality issues that others reported. The deck is smooth and there are no bumps of metal or anything. The safety guard is easy to remove if you need to get access to the blade to remove/sharpen etc. The clamp is necessary for holding thick pieces. Some tips for clamping. If you have thick "fluffy" paper you'll need to use good clamping force. If you don't have enough force, your product will shift slightly during cutting and you may experience a slight curve to your cut. I attached a picture, look at the 3rd book from the top. You can see at the bottom it kind of curves out because the top part of the work wasn't clamped enough and it shifted during cutting. It's pretty easy to tighten and loosen, even one handed as you can see in my video. The only thing that isn't great is the black backstop. It's plastic and it rests on the metal rail, but the tolerances are pretty loose so you have to be really careful to use both hands on each side of the bar to make sure you are lining up on each measurement point so that it is even. When you use the black screw knob to tighten it down, it pushes the bar toward you, so you want to keep your hand firmly in it when tightening it down so that it doesn't shift out of position. However I think the only way to get a better back stop with better tolerance would be for them to have machined something out of metal. I think you can still get very good tolerances with some trial and error, you just have to experiment and get used to how to clamp properly etc. For the money I'm impressed. Also, over all it's just extremely satisfying (at least for me) to watch this cut.

So glad I upgraded.......
I just received this today and did some testing. I need it to cut the bindings off of books. I also had just returned another one by Ace Crew for 85.99 and it was a 12 inch. These 2 machines do not compare. While they both cut, there are very obvious differences. This machine is superior by far. The entire thing has a professional look that the other didn't have. The quality shows. For example, the cheaper one had a circular wheel that was unfinished. The metal was rough and bumpy. I also had to put that one together. I actually had to screw the blade portion onto the board and it was very heavy. The alignment was off by quite a bit so the grid was useless. The grid on this is precise. The bar that moves side to side on the other one wasn't straight until you tightened it which meant that you may not have it in the correct spot....ever. On this one, it slides and is supported so it doesn't misalign on you. Where you put it, is where it stays. The grid on this is nice because it has some sections that are darker to show standard sizes. The other one I had was just a grid that was not only misaligned.....it was too busy to the eye. On this one the release for the blade is a simple push on a pivoting piece. The other one you had to pull out a knob and it wasn't great quality so it didn't come out all of the way at first. The blade arm on this is a bit tight. It doesn't swing as easily but depending on your needs this may be good. You have to be very deliberate and it's not going to just fall on you. The only issue someone might have is that the cutting stick is slightly below the base in height. So when you cut the dip in the paper could cause it to fan a bit. It is so unbelievable small though that it likely wouldn't bother anyone. (I am OCD about details and this doesn't bother ME.) If this would bother you, I recommend using clips to clip your paper stacks so they can't move. The holding arm does hold well but if you have clips all the way around it shouldn't dip at that spot. I used this method with the cheaper one and they were all uniform. I need my pages to be close so I can scan them and if they are different lengths they won't go in straight....this dip doesn't cause that type of fanning. I love the additional section that helps hold larger papers straight. The other one didn't have that. The end of the bar that moves side to side actually holds tools and additional parts. It came with extra screws and another type of screw that can replace a damaged one. It also had an extra foot pad. There are basic instructions. However, if you're buying one of these you probably understand the whole point of it and will understand what you need to do. I am not disappointed in my decision to try a better one.

Not happy with this.
I REALLY wanted to love this but I can't. Yes, I know this isn't a professional cutter but I really thought it would work for small quantities of greeting cards, postcards, and business cards. If you want to make business cards, you're out of luck. You can't cut anything smaller than 2.25". It only has 2 spots that show inches so you need to be great with CM/MM. The clamp that holds the paper down has a curve in it which makes every single cut crooked. For my use, it's pretty much worthless. The back clamp can be wiggly and I'm afraid the cheap plastic will break if I tighten it too much. The side guide doesn't seem to be straight but maybe it is. I'm pretty sure my paper isn't crooked but the edges don't line up straight with the printed grid. I'll take photos and add them if I can.

I LOVE IT! I would recommend this to anyone to save time and arm pain!
I absolutely LOVE my paper cutter! It arrived super fast and can cut through the books I'm digitizing with ease! I know it says a max of 400 sheets but I've cut through many more than that depending on the thickness of the pages and had NO issues at all. I can't believe I waited so long to get this! I manually cut a bunch of books to digitize them for my private collection and it took ages. I got this and polished off a big box of books in about 20 minutes! I highly recommend this cutter to anyone who needs to cut many sheets of paper at the same time! It will pay for itself within the first few uses in the time saved!
