What size is the base?

It was a gift, but the base looks just like the picture and holds the ball perfectly.

Can you actually read what's written inside the globe?

I can't but I am answering only for the universe globe.

What is the base made of? Is there an area where you can get something engrave such as on the bottom of the base?

The base is laminated wood. Its about 2" high and about 3 1/2" wide. The bottom has 3 small legs and there would be no way to engrave on it. I would put up pictures but you cant here
