Superbly engineered
The engineering in this system is superb. As an engineer myself I can appreciate the dozens of little details in the system that had to have taken a lot of thought, time, and prototyping. First of all, the stackability. The boxes not only stack, but firmly fall into place so they don't slide off. They also lock together. On cases with a lid, a convenient recess for placing a label tape is visible even when stacked tightly. Of course, stacked and locked together is great for transportation, but not for day to day use. This is where the racking system comes into play. Dead simple to assemble and very sturdy. I will say that that carrier brackets gave me a lot of trouble until I realized it was all operator error. Using the wrong tool for the job. It is difficult to get the bolt to engage the nut with an Allen wrench, even a a good size t-handle wrench. However, a Allen bit on a 12 inch extension bit attached to a drill does the trick with no problem - it allows you to hold the bracket in place with one hand and drive the bolt home with the other. So as I say, this was totally my issue and not the bracket design. I would like to see one small design change here, however: Graduated markings on the square tubing to allow easy alignment of a pair of brackets would be great. A tape measure works, but takes time and is difficult to manage while holding the bracket in place. If I was to build these again, I would lay out all the square tubing together and mark them with a framing square. I have the small, medium and open tote cases and they are all great. I want to comment specifically on the small case though. It is an amazingly flexible case. You can leave all the plastic organizers in it and store small tools/parts, or remove some or all of them. One of my favorite features are the groves in the lid that catch the edges of the organizers - this means if you configure a case with only some of the organizers installed they are still captured securely and don't slide around - no matter where you place them. I have also found the small bins built into the lids to be helpful. These bins fold down and fall into slot molded into the edge of the case, which props the lid open and allows you to access the two bins without needing to hold the lid open. One of the bins is has no dividers, and the other is divided in to smaller sections. The case has handles on the sides, front, and top making it easy to cary anyway that is convenient.

Great jobsite cooler that locks in with your tool boxes.
Have used this cooler for quite a few years now. It stays in my work van. During the middle of Texas summers, it holds ice for about 2 days with frequent opening and stocking with room temp or warm waters. My boss has a Yeti that’s about the same size and I would say that this cooler performs similar for around half the price and it locks in with my Toughsystem boxes.

Great boxes with a couple of nit picks
After reading a ton of reviews and watching the destruction test on Youtube, I just bought several of these boxes (2 small, 2 Large, and one XL. They are great boxes, well built, stackable, lockable, etc., but DeWalt's designers had the opportunity to make a truly great system with tons of plug-n-play parts that tied into and played well with other DeWalt products, but the designers didn't have their coffee or the different design teams didn't talk to each other. So I have a few bones to pick. 1) After seeing what someone did with a small case for an angle grinder, I thought I would take his idea and tweak it a bit for my use. While working on it I discovered that the lid wouldn't close with the accessory tray installed. "Well, I'll just take it off the small box lid and install it on a large or XL lid." But my nefarious plan was foiled as the small cases have screw points molded into the structural foam for attaching the accessory tray. The large and XL lids do not. Surely I am not the only person who has wanted to do this? 2) Now I might be being a bit anal retentive here.... The accessory tray is a neat idea. But the left hand side one is one huge bin, the left hand side has several narrower slots. You would think that you would be able to take the little rubber inserts from DeWalt's screwdriver bit hard case and insert them in the accessory lid -- and thus not have to carry around several hard cases or having you drill bits and drivers rattling around in the case... Again, my hopes and dreams were shattered as not only to they not fit, there is nowhere to attach them. 3) The final insult is that the small case comes with 8 bins (2 large and 6 small) they fit really well in the small case. But if you are putting tools in a small case, then you have these yellow bins sitting on your tool bench looking all sad and needing a place to go and things to be put in them! So again I thought, "I'll put them at the bottom of the large case!" But I was denied. Due to the structural ribs inside the larger cases, the bins do not fit like they do in the small box. You can't fit all 8 of the bins in the larger cases (2 of the small bins must be omitted) leaving a 3-3/8" gap from side to side and a 3/4" gap from front to back. Man were the designers at DeWalt asleep at the drafting table here. They came up with pretty darn good cases (tough and weather resistant) but I think they missed an opportunity to have a truly great system without much extra cost by simply re-purposing some of their existing pieces-parts... Bottom line. Great product easily worthy of 4 stars. With a few tweaks to make it truly modular it would be 5 stars.

Best tool boxs I've had yet.
If you transport tool, then these boxes are great. They are lockable, and waterproof, so they can be tossed in the bed of a truck, or used to store tools on a boat etc, with out worry. It also means they can easily be washed off. The boxes are sturdy enough for an average sized person to stand on with out them bending/flexing at all. They can certainly take a bit of a beating, handing bangs and drops. The handles (top and side) are comfortable to use and also sturdy. The latches open and close easily and have head up well over the past year+ of use. The clips on the side that hold multiple boxes together are the only part of these tool boxes I feel are a bit flimsy. DEWALT has changed the design of these. Both designs are thankfully compatible, and the new ones do appear to be tougher, but if you're using these regularly, or are not careful to close them when not in use, I could see them getting broken. (That said they haven't been a problem yet for me.) The hard sides allow the boxes to be stackable, and clips will lock them together, making transport with a standard dolly pretty easy, and storage either on the Dewalt toughsystem rack or just stacked or on shelves keeps everything tidy, but at hand. The Extra Large case is large enough to hold larger tools such as circular saws, or multiple tools. The Large case can easily hold two angle grinders along with backing pads, discs, and other such accessories, and have room to spare. Yes, they're a bit pricy, but are worth it. They'll hold up for a long time, keeping the contents protected. And if you compare them to other stackable tool boxes they're a much better product for a comparable price.

I even use this as a work bench
Each shelf holds up to a specific weight, and I don't use a lot of force when working on my projects because of convinence of power tools. Using this as my modular toolbox storage and as a work bench has been great, the rails have an opening that allow you to insert screws from under, or on top, to fix a board of wood to create a quick work surface. When I first got this I searched the internet all over asking, does the hardware come separately? The parts for the rails and the connection to the beams come in this package. When I originally got mine, it was missing a lot of the pieces. I notified dewalt and amazon and get this replaced within 2 todays, thank you prime. There is a lot of customization that can be done with these and allow you to pick your spacing for each tool box. I recommend that these be primarily used with dewalts drawer modular boxes, open handed totes and suitcase totes. In terms of hardware, such as fixing the rack to the wall, or floor, you will have to buy your own pieces, which I prefer.
