Perfect for Shop Smith
Since this fits a 5/8" shaft, it fit and works perfectly on my Shop Smith Mark V. Turned my lathe into an awesome pen making machine. Very high quality Mandrel. Nicely machined. I recommend.

LOOOVE IT!!! IT works! Bought for an all-in-one
Got this to lathe pens because yes, I need yet another hobby. We bought a used multi-tool thing; it's got a table saw, a lathe, a sander...I forget what else, but they're around on market place and we lucked out and found one with all the pieces. I wanted to try playing with the lathe on it; got this, got some pen clicky bits from Amazon and sure enough! It worked and IT'S A BLAST! Do we need pens made out of the tree that grows out back? No, of course not! Are we doing it anyway? YES! YES we are, because it's SO FUN!

Great product.
This is a great product and does what it is expected to do. The only issue I have and that is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is I had to locktite the shaft into the adapter because it kept coming loose. Even after yhay the nut still comes loose sometimes and allows my pen blank to spin. It's annoying but not the end of the world.

Works perfectly
if you have an older sears lathe that has a 5/8" arbor instead of a drive center on the headstock this is exactly what you need. Works perfectly even with a dead center on the tailstock (grease). Perfectly accurate with no wobble at all, 7 nice steel bushings. Turning some real nice pens with this

Works great!
My 48 inch lathe is old school and has a 5/8ths thread with no way to use a regular taper. This works great with the 1inch adapter. Money well spent.

It WILL work in a three jaw chuck
I asked the question about this working in a three jaw chuck. The answers I received made no sense, so I ordered one to find out. The outside of the end designed to screw onto the lathe spindle is machined round and chucks up just fine. I don't have a wood lathe but I do have a small metal lathe and only wanted to do a few items, so this worked out well for me. I didn't have to buy another lathe. To those who answered my question, I appreciate your answers and your concern for my safety. Maybe you didn't understand the question, or I didn't ask it clearly, but your concerns were unfounded. Maybe it wouldn't work in a three jaw chuck designed for a wood lathe, but it works in a metal lathe chuck. As for the mandrel itself, it worked well. Once tightened in the chuck the opposite end aligned perfectly with the live center in the tailstock. Brass tubes and bushings fit the rod. Works great. Recommended.

Cheaply made
After making less than 10 pens on this mandrel the brass knurled nut will not tighten any more. It has become stripped inside. This is a common problem when reading the reviews on Penn State Industries ( the actual seller of this) website. You cannot replace just the nut.

Ok but will bend easily.
Not great. Ok but not great. The rod bends if not supported.
