Great espresso in a small easy to use package
So far, I’m really impressed with this little espresso maker. It’s easy to use and clean, seems durable, and does make really good espresso. The unit comes with a base for filling with ground coffee and a base for use with prefilled pods. I have only used the ground coffee pod base. I grind fresh coffee beans (Peet’s) to a fine powder (note the manual says to use course ground but seems to work fine with fine 🤷♂️) and use the included small scoop to dump into the coffee pod and tamp with the bottom of the scoop. I boil water in a kettle and pour some in the collection cup to warm it and pour into the tank to the max line. When you place the cover on the water tank, ensure the hand pump is in the down locked position so when you release it it will prime with water. I pump slowly but it doesn’t seem to matter that much to me. The result is a bold flavored espresso with a (surprisingly) nice thick crema. Some of the common complaints are that the coffee comes out not as hot as some like and yeah, I wish it was a little hotter but preheating helps and you can immediately drink it when it comes out so I’m fine with that. One negative that I noticed is that there is a silicone flap between the base that holds the coffee pod and the water tank that doesn’t come apart (I think) and seems to stay wet/hold water When the rest of it is dry so could be an area for mold risk but haven’t had any issues yet. Is it as good as the best espresso I’ve had? No. But it is excellent and for the price, portability, and ease of use/cleaning, I’m going to use this little thing a lot!

One of the best portable machines out there.
This is hands down one of the best portable espresso machines I've owned.(PS: I'm excluding any non-portable electricity powered machines when making my comparisons here)I've tried everything from moka pot to French press to aeropress but never got the taste and results close to this one. (Granted the others weren't espresso machines, but an espresso is what I have always wanted).I had always wondered, my hand pressure should be enough to make a decent espresso.. Why isn't there a machine that can use human power so that it can be portable?Look no further. This thing makes a great shot. I just go to my local fancy grocery store and get beans fresh grounded to "espresso" fineness. I only use this inside my home, so portability was not high on my list but price certainly was. This checked all boxes for me. It is super compact, made of high quality materials and has consistently given me great espresso.

Makes a decent single-shot espresso!
I just received this and pulled two shots, pleasantly impressed! The little scoop provided is worthless, except as a tamper, barely holds 5.5g of fine ground coffee. So I used a scale to measure 7g coffee (espresso fine) into the basket ("Powder container", G per figure in manual). Might be able to get another 0.5 gram in at most, but I didn't want to push the limits right at the start. The MAX mark in the "water tank" is 2 oz, which would make for a watery shot, so I again used a scale and added a little more than 1 fl oz / 28g - I used 33g of boiling water since the coffee grounds will absorb some. One doesn't get much resistance from the plunger - the first five "pumps" drew no liquid into the bottom cup, but then gradually with the next 10-15 pumps, the water moved through. The plunger resistance never increased, I could only tell that all the water in the upper reservoir was done when the resistance got even less. Still, good to open and check. The resultant shot had lots of crema (see pics) and tasted good too - as good as a pull from a real espresso m/c, only with temp. loss.Cleanup is very straightforward too.The only downside is the coffee basket is so small, can't make a doppio in one go! Hence 4-star.Can't speak to using capsules (and won't, they're evil!)Instruction manual has some mysterious phrases such as "if the coffee doesn't grease" but you can figure out what they're trying to say.The maker comes with two clear rubber o-rings, but the manual makes no mention of these and I haven't bothered to figure it out what they're for.All in all, I'm pretty pleased with this, let's see how it holds up to regular use.

Worked at first, then produced mostly water
I have to return this item. At first it worked beautifully. Then each time I used it, it produced more and more watery coffee, until today I watched as the first two thirds of the pumps produced pure clear water and the last third a trickle of actual coffee. I skimmed reviews looking for help. I tried to tamp more. Not tamp at all. Made sure the coffee basket was in correctly and the lid on properly. Made sure everything was screwed down. Made sure the screens weren't clogged. Tried pumping slower. Tried pumping faster. Nope. Water with a little coffee in it. I give up. Some other reviewers had the same issue. Wondering if there are defective devices out there. I'm going to take my refund money and buy the smallest nespresso machine instead. (I bought the moocoo for my desk. Office coffee, ironically at Amazon!, is not great. Well unless you like that super burned, charred Seattle coffee that I don't understand.)I'm super thankful I can return this still. But if it were to actually work, it's fairly easy to use and super easy to clean. Give it a good rinse and use a little soap on occasion. I'm envious of those people that are still successfully using theirs.

eventually stopped working properly.
I used this handheld espresso maker once every day since i go it. Eventually the pump started sticking worse and worse to wear it doesn't even pop up now, and i have to take it apart fiddle with it to get it working somewhat decently. it shouldn't take me 20 minutes to make two shots worth of espresso, but alas that is how long it takes, not even for great espresso, at best right now with these problems i get very little crema it's mostly just brown water, still usable and decent. But what i have to go through to get that is just not wroth it, It's not better than drip coffee. and the cold brew i make works better as espresso than what comes out of this device. At frist i loved it. Pressing the pump was easy, didn't need a lot of force and worked very very well. I always cleaned and dried it properly, and slowly and steadily the pump started sticking. Now when I press down i have to hold it down until i hear i little hiss before releasing. The grounds also must be ground perfectly to the devices liking, too coarse and you'll get the dreaded dishwater looking crap some people talked about, to fine and you can wind up with the water completely bypassing the grounds. you must also tamp the grounds perfectly, just slightly more than light pressure. again tamp it too much and water bypasses the grounds, to light and you get dishwater. what i just said is'nt by issue though. I know how to get the perfect grind with the perfect tamp. my issue is the pump itself. which evetuanlly breaks down and is no longer usable. It is also not metal, it had a metal casing, but the pump arm itself is plastic.Im sure this espresso maker is fine for ocassional use, or even to take on a single trip somewhere, but it is not something that will last a long time. it has very very short life span, and for this price, yes the parts are made nicely and durable, except the pump cap, which is cheap and eventually stops working properly.I also can't return as by the time this issue arose the return window closed. otherwise i would be returning, so i will be going back to try and fix what i can and see if i can get it working properly again. but yes i would prefer to return and get my money back.

Easy to use, easy to clean, portable, tasty
It has already paid for itself...and Starbucks is pissed that they aren't seeing me daily! This is incredible easy to use, easy to clean, and makes some tasty espresso. Is it as good as the $9000 machine I used to work on at the coffee shop, no (and let's be real, this device is less than$50)...but for what you're paying, it is a damn good second...and unlike that cafe machine, this is compact and portable. I can pack it in my overnight bag with a ziplock of grounds, and boom, delicious espresso!! For a coffee experience that will make your barista miss seeing your face: boil water to JUST boiling (bubbles rapidly popping), while your water is boiling you're putting your coffee of choice into the tiny filter and tamping it down with the back of the scoop. Once your water has finished heating (about 105 degrees makes a great coffee), pour it into the top section and tighten it on. Make sure everything is tight and begin your cardio workout...the first few pumps are tough then you really start to burn the calories, about a minute later you've got a rich crema in the bottom cup. Carefully unscrew it and enjoy as is, or you can add an equal part of hot water for an Americano. Of course, if you use some generic Folgers-type coffee, you'll probably have your coffee connoisseur card revoked immediately. Friend don't let friends drink crappy coffee. Use a good bean...you saved a bunch of money buying this, you can shoot to splurge on good coffee beans. Don't be THAT person.

Expected better performance...the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Overall a great product... but needs better engineering to be more reliable.I received this portable espresso machine, and started trying different the different ways of making espresso with it.There are two options: Using the "pods" or using ground coffee. The ground coffee option worked fine and did not have any problems with using it. But, I got this because you can use the Nespresso Pods with it.The good - works fine while using the ground coffee, and have not had a problem with it so far.The bad - Nespresso Pods worked for about 5 pods and than started having "water-like" espresso. The ugly - After further investigation on why I was getting "water-like" espresso while using the Nespresso Pods, was simple. The bottom foil was not being "punctured" all the time. This is due to the square units on the bottom are not penetrating thru the bottom foil. There is a upper unit that compresses the pod down. This unit has sharp metal spikes that will cause the pod to be penetrated from the top (this works). But the compression upon assembly doesn't allow the bottom square units to penetrate the bottom foil. Result is some or none of the foil is opened to allow the pressured water to flow thru the pod (from the top to the bottom).Sorry to say, but I sending this unit back for a refund. I worked for one week...sigh. :(- UpdateAsked Amazon to send another new unit and it arrived and took some measurements.See the images of the results. Basically something has changed in the unit to not allow it to compress like it did when I started using it. It has only changed .002 inches, but this is enough to not allow the bottom foil to open (and therefore allowing the espresso to be released from the unit).- - To solve this issue, use a push pin and puncture the bottom of the unit a few times before inserting the capsule and using it. Hope this helps!

Does what it’s suppose to! One critical tip!
Got this so that my wife and I can have the occasional espresso or added shot to our coffees. Works like a charm. Decent cream and strong shot. The “glass” at the base doesn’t get hot and you can sip right from it if you choose. Advice: I read a few reviews that said it didn’t work or that the pumping did nothing. It really is CRITICAL that you have the pump secured down and locked FIRST after you have water loaded and ready. Then unlock it to release it so the button/arm rises. This primes the pump to be able to provide the seal/pressure for the action. Cleaning process is what you would expect from a device built for travel. If you’re making multiple shots, you just have to take it apart and wash out/put new grounds in the chamber or put in a new pod!
