Training for the CrossFit Games: A Year of Programming used to train Julie Foucher, The 2nd Fittest Woman on Earth, CrossFit Games 2012

a rare glimpse...
This book provides an incredibly rare and invaluable look into an entire year of unique, complex, and successful programming. Just by purchasing this book you will not become a better athlete, coach, or person. However, should you take the lessons of this programming and apply it to your own training, or (dare I even suggest) you actually do this programming as prescribed, you will see improvements in ways you may not have thought possible. It's hard to appreciate a "book" that takes weeks/months to benefit from, but if you don't have the gusto to hang with the lessons and design of this programming I think it's safe to say this book isn't for you. If you find that you've been doing crossfit, or other training, and don't have a good understanding of how to progressively program or how to break through plateaus, this book can help you open those doors.Much of the crossfit community is sorely lacking in progressive programming -- including skills development, strength development, movement precision, and stamina. Any workout, on a given day, will make you a bit more fit...that's easy enough to accomplish. Programming that builds and develops the complete athlete is truly unique, and greatly in need. Doug is uniquely gifted in his understanding of the old schools, new schools, and evil schools of training and how to build them into an unmatched development series to optimize each athlete's potential. Follow the pages in the book, and see how workouts cycle, weights change, combinations of movements change, and think about how each is a new challenge that will make you better if you execute them correctly. No one can make you a better athlete on paper. Doug's book gives you some tools, ideas, and lots of workout programming to help you get there if you can put the work in.

It's for "regular" folks,too!
This review is addressed to the "regular," age 60-something woman who, like me,wants to stay physically strong and mentally alert for the rest of her life. The fitness programming in Doug's book begins the day after my 62nd birthday. The day before, on my 62nd Birthday, I trained, with Doug at his HyperFit USA gym doing selected tasks from Doug's programming that were scaled for me. (I do remember that kettle bells were involved!). It's important to understand that the programs in Doug's book are scale able and CrossFit trainers know how to coach and get you going toward a personal regimen of fitness. You do not have to be an incredible athlete, like Julie, to engage in this programming and get results. You will never be bored with any of the work-out tasks either! Your input must be dedication and trust in Doug' s programming. Your reward for this will be the ability to take yourself to a (new) level of mental toughness and physical health. In the interest of full disclosure, please know that:(1) There have been days in the gym when, after Doug outlined my WOD, I would look at him and say "You have got to be kidding me." (2) When I started working out with Doug, many years ago, I thought I was fit. HAH! I could not even get off the floor comfortably. Sound familiar? Get going. Have fun and stay fit!Nancy Caine HarbourA "regular" HyperFit USA person

Great learning tool for crossfit newbies and absolute best training system for any athlete!
"Many strength gains come with correct form...proper technique is crucial."Doug's one smart man when it comes to training for crossfit! I've learned more than I could ever imagine but the most important thing and one thing I'm extra pushy with when it comes to our athletes is that you move well!!!!!! Every single person that walks through our doors is different...some have had multiple knee injuries...some are and have been serious athletes their entire lives...and some haven't worked out ever! However, all these people should be able to perform a basic squat or push-up. I have learned the hard way that the basics are far more important than all the elaborate muscle ups or snatches. Technique is crucial! Spending the extra time working on mobilities has saved me and hopefully will get me to the games this year!I recommend anyone new to read this! Learn you're basics! Go seek help from a L1 CrossFit trainer! I believe crossfit is for everyone no matter what abilities. This program will change you're mind on what is possible...but do understand that it takes time to build into this volume...be patient :)

Excellent Resource!
Doug Chapman is a highly respected, well known coach in the CrossFit world. Our top athletes at our box are following his programming with amazing results. I was thrilled to see Coach Doug unveil his "secrets" in this book and purchased it immediately. It is incredibly inspiring and encouraging to follow Julie Foucher's progress and improved benchmarks as she follows his prescription for top level competition. She recalls when she first deadlifted 200 lbs or put 90+ lbs over her head and then allows the reader a glimpse into her personal records and increased strength as she followed Coach Chapman's structure. The book is encouraging and gives the reader a CrossFit programming blueprint to follow for success. I have witnessed first hand the benefits of his programming as top athletes at our box have diligently followed the formula with amazing improvement. His perspective helps athletes bear through the challenges of his programming knowing that results will come with strict adherence. A must read to anyone serious about getting stronger and better at CrossFit. 5 stars!

Inspiring
Nice book and good programming. Some imprecisions left here and there that leave interpretation but anyway, this book is not meant to be followed line by line.

Good read and workouts.
This is a good program. Read the intro and take your form seriously with any Olympic style lifting. It'll kick your ass but it's some of the best dynamic exercise you can do.
