Turn your back to all candles except one. Use the remote to set each candle one by one . After that you can turn them all off at once. When you turn them back on together, they will still be the different colors you set them on.

Just got these today. put batteries in the candles. can’t get them to do anything with the remote!? am i missing a step!?

Just throwing it out there since you said they were new: are you sure you cleared the battery preserver tab from the remote? If that tab isn't completely removed it won't give the remote power. Conversely if that tab was missing when you got the candles then the remote (watch) battery is likely dead and needs to be replaced.
