How loud is this unit at 3 feet

Very loud. It won't hurt you, but it is loud.

The ads cite 1200 yards and 1200 feet. it can't be both, so is the range 1200 feet or is it 1200 yards?

Hi, the Sound Projection Range: Up to 1200 Yards. You may check other details of the unit by visiting our website pyleaudio.com. Type the model number on the search box PMP52BT for more details. Thank you.

Can you purchase just the battery pack to replace the one if broke?

So it doesn't come with a rechargeable battery, you can use 8 D batteries.. but I buy the Technical Pro Rechargeable Megaphone battery which is compatible with this model

When you take the microphone off the hook, do you still need to press the trigger to speak, or can you set the megaphone down?

you can set it down but you have to press the thing on the side of the mic to speak.
