How are you able to track the dog with just the collar?

You can't with just a collar, you need the handheld GPS receiver to track.

How far will it pick up?

Totally depends on the terrain. I'very lost signal within a few hundred yards if they go over a ridge. I have tracked them over several miles if I'm on top of a ridge and they are off in a hole. I mostly hunt the Cumberland Plateau in TN. Regardless once you get an elevation advantage back, you'll pick their signal back up again. I would never turn my dogs loose without it.

Is there a monthly charge for the GPS services ?

No. The collars receive the GPS signal and communicate their position to the receiver. There is no recurring charge as this system does not use the Internet. However the collars must be within receiving range of the receiver, up to 1 mile from my experience.

Can you track 1 collar on 2 different handhelds

Yes, you can just share the number of the collar with the other handheld and both can track.
