Would these fit books in as storage for a DIY bookshelf?

Yes it could. I use a few of these for dry foods on an open shelf in my kitchen. They pack in quite a lot. I bought them 5 years ago and they are still in daily use and look good. They are well made and properly finished off. You could paint them as they are not vanished but I left mine natural.

They look great, are they ok for beer bottles too?

It depends on the amount of bottles. The base is made of plywood and that is why we do not recommend carrying very heavy things inside.
