Yes you have to rinse the clothes. After draining the wash water you then refill with clean water and put the clothes through another cycle. Drain and then Spin them,

Is it supposed to drain automatically, I don't understand how to get the water out-I switched the gear to drain and nothing happened?

The short hose needs to be laid down lower than the level of water. It drains by gravity, not a water pump. I personally place the machine on a waterproof box a little higher than the toilet, and let the water drain into that. Yes, it's a pain in the a**, but it still is Better than washing clothes in the sink.
