JBL Charge 4 Portable Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker and Power Bank with Rechargeable Battery, Black

I’ve only just taken delivery of this speaker but all ready, I feel qualified enough to submit this review. This is my third Bluetooth speaker, previous ones being the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 and the JBL Essential. This review will compare the Charge 4 and the Essential. Firstly, I cannot fault the beautiful packaging of both the Essential and the Charge 4. You know you are going to get quality just by unboxing the devices. Once unboxed, the size difference between the Essential and the Charge 4 put a smile on my face. The Charge 4 is bigger, but still manages to remain portable. The Charge 4 also has a flat base that enables the speaker to stand straight and tall, whereas the Essential was cylindrical so was difficult to balance on a flat surface. The Essential has a hand strap, the Charge 4 does not. Bluetooth connection is almost instant with the Charge 4. I did have a problem initially and had to reset my I phone for the Charge 4 to recognise my device. So to the the sound. The Essential is a stereo device but the Charge 4 is not. Don’t let this put you off. Stereo needs separation to fully appreciate it. And with speakers of this size, this, in my opinion is impossible. I sat the Charge 4 next to my Essential and stereo or not, the Charge 4 shined. Bass is nearly always touted as a selling point for Bluetooth speakers. This is a personal issue, but I listen mostly to news/talk stations. With that in mind, listening to LBC, I can hear a feint low frequency hum coming from the two side speakers. This, some readers, will find a little annoying. If you are after bass, then you not be disappointed. Having said that, the mid to high frequencies are there so as not to spoil your listening pleasure. To sum up, the Essential is a lovely little speaker. It’s more portable, the sound is ok if you are not after sonic sweetness but it does roll around a bit! The Charge 4 is simply a better sounding speaker, barring the low frequency hum, has a stand to keep it straight and level, fast Bluetooth, and incredible battery life. You take your pick. PS. I have read that the Charge 4 takes a little breaking in. I will keep an eye, or ear on this and update if necessary. Hope this review is helpful.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this unit. Sure I did some research prior to purchase and this looked pretty good on paper. Having had it for a few days and had time to get used to it, I can honestly say that I am very impressed. It came swiftly delivered and well packaged. In fact the excellent box that it comes in, is worth keeping for protecting your unit when it is in transit. It is eminently easy to set up and to update to the latest software. Use is easy and the sound is so crisp and clear, even with volume higher than I would listen to music on. I have used it in my smart car, as the speakers that came with the car are not up to standard and it was impressive. The rubber base ensured that it did mot move around and the sound filled the cabin of the smart with clear vocals and music. I have taken it on on seafront picnic already and again it performed exceptionally. The added bonus of it being a power bank, is probably better suited to some, than myself but it is a nice touch. As is being able to connect your mp3 player. I am keeping mine in the bathroom for tunes during showers and have found myself carrying it from room to room afterwards. Even though I have Echos throughout my place. Battery wise, I fully charged it on arrival and have used it for around 16hrs so far. It shows no sign of stopping just yet, which is a bonanza. It is reassuringly quite heavy for its size, which indicates a quality build and the waterproof quality of it, is again an added bonus. The cover for the ports is robust and the whole unit very well made. At the time of writing this, most units were around £150 but the Teal/Turquoise colour unit was £99 for some reason. Even better! This portable speaker is Highly Recommended- Buy with Confidence. I do not receive any payment or free goods for writing these reviews. I Tried 2 cheaper options first for a portable BT speaker before choosing the Charge 4. First I purchased a Majority Atlas sound bar due to reviews saying it sounded great for music but poor for a TV, the turn dual looks good for my needs. Second purchase was a Tronsmart T2 Plus, reviews said it was very loud and had great detail and bass. I found them both to be tinny and not loud enough. Tronsmart after care was great though. I decided to spend a bit more but not too much as the JBL was a warehouse deal with extra discount. I am using this in a transit van due to the OE head unit been erratic in operation. Whereas the previous mentioned speakers struggled to give enough volume to overcome road noise and sounded tinny, the JBL is loud enough for me and the sound quality is full bodied and has a nice amount of thump in the bass. BT connectivity to a phone or MP3 player is excellent and hasn't dropped off or struggled to connect. The unit feels very robust and we'll made.

This is the second JBL charge 4 I’ve bought. Build quality is brilliant, sound quality superb and when connected to other JBL speakers via Bluetooth is capable of filling a large room or garden with ease. Battery life lives up to the claims and charging takes little time when using an appropriate charger. I’ve used speakers of a similar size costing significantly more than this one did and have been underwhelmed in comparison. If you do plan to take this speaker out and about then a case can be bought for around £15 on Amazon that will protect the speaker cones and make transportation so much easier. I’d highly recommend this product.

Had a sony bluetooth speaker for 6+ years that was £30-40 which had good sound and volume, but the battery eventually went and so i decided to upgrade and i bought the JBL. The speaker is quality, from the sound, to the feel and even the box it comes in (comparable to that you get with luxury watches). I wouldn't normally spend £100 odd on a speaker but so far it's looking to be a good purchase. The speaker doesn't distort on full volume and is plenty loud enough for in the home, not tried it outside but sure it will be fine. As with all electronics and their claims of battery life, i doubt it lasts as long as they claim, particularly on full volume, but from my previous speaker it's a massive improvement. Overall a decent speaker and a good buy.

Very good quality. Sounds nice and has a long battery life. I've been using it to listen to music while I work and it lasts a couple of weeks or so. Only a couple of things I have a problem with: The excessively loud noise it makes when you switch it off or on. Doesn't seems to take any notice of the volume level and it's completely unnecessary. We get another pointless noise to tell us when a device had paired with it as well. It has to be switched on to charge things. This means when you're on a long train journey and thought to take to charge your phone, not only do you have to announce it to the whole carriage thanks to the pointless noise mentioned above, but any idiot can pair with it and play music from it as once it's on, the Bluetooth is also on. Why not let me use to to charge my phone without the speaker/bluetooth being on?

Have had this speaker over 4 years now. Has never let me down, still holds an amazing battery life, amazing sound quality, really packs a punch for it's size - I rarely put it above 40% volume. Its also very portable and I frequently carry around my home to place in various places. Have recommended to many people and will continue to. Listen to it every day, one of the best purchases I've made.

I have two Flip4's and a Charge 3. The charge 4 really is a great speaker to listen to, the balance is just right. Sounds at its best at 60-80% volume. There is a lot of discussion about it being mono, which it is, however stereo from drive units 3cm apart as in the charge 3 - really! The charge 4 has a deeper bass than the charge 3 and in my opinion is just nicer to listen too. It is well built, looks lush in black and well worth the money (£119). There maybe a charge 5 at some point but you will not be disappointed with this. Great price from Amazon. It also works well with a second unit if you really need stereo.

Habe mich für die JBL Charge 4 entschieden, sie klingt absolut super.... Bin total begeistert. Hatte parallel auch noch die etwas kleinere JBL Flip5 und die Bose SoundLink Mini II zum Vergleich geordert. Die Flip 5 ist bei leiser Musik auch noch klasse. Vor allem für die kleine Größe. Allerdings schwächelt der Bass ab einer gewissen Lautstärke so das Sie der Klang mit der Charge 4 nicht mehr mithalten kann. Die Bose Soundlink Mini II hat einen guten Bass. vor allem für die Größe. Allerdings fehlen hier leider die Höhen- und die Mitteltöne. Es wundert mich das Bose das nicht besser hinbekommt. Der unterschied zur Charge 4 ist aber so groß das ich die Bose leider gar nicht mithalten kann. Schade, ich wollte eigentlich die Bose kaufen.;-)

Absolut super Soundbox, hochwertig verarbeitet und laut! Wir hatten schon Beschwerden von den Nachbarn drei Stockwerke über uns, weil insbesondere der Bass so durchdrückt! Feature 1: Die Box kann auch das Handy laden und man kann im Urlaub - auf Reisen - die Box und das Handy gleichzeitig laden (z.B. im Auto) wenn man die Box an eine Stromquelle schließt und das Handy an die Box. Das hat uns gerettet. Feature 2: Alternativ zur Bluetooth-Verbindung hat die Box einen Aux-Eingang, durch den man sie mittels eines standard 3,5mm Aux-Kabels z.B. als Laptop-Lautsprecher verwenden kann. Feature 3: Unter Verwendung der JBL app kann man mehrere JBL Boxen synchron schalten. Entweder einfach so, dass aus allen der gleiche Sound kommt oder man weist jeder Box eine Position zu (links/rechts) um sich stereo beschallen zu lassen.
