What is the size of the metal nail that goes inside of heel? I need small ones

Great question! I needed a small metal nail for one of my shoes. I couldn't find any on Amazon that gave the metal nail specs. I had to take them to a shoe maker. All my other shoes were able to be replaced with this product I bought. If anything I would call a shoe maker and ask them the sizes to look for. Hope this helps. :)

how difficult is it to extract the old post to replace the new one?

It's not difficult using the tool provided, but none of the sizes of the replacement heel dowels didn't fit my heels.
