Is this extinguisher recommended for cars?

This fire extinguisher, is an ABC extinguisher. That means it can put out any kind of fire. So, if you have a fire in your car, this fire extinguisher will put it out. However, fire extinguishers of this type have a chemical powder inside that puts out the fire. If the fire is in your engine, you can put it out with this fire extinguisher but getting this chemical powder all through your engine is probably not a great idea. Ideally, you should use a CO2 fire extinguisher. This is the type that you'll most often see on television. Has a great big cone-shaped nozzle and, when you use it, it looks like plumes of white smoke is coming out of it. This is actually carbon dioxide. It's extremely cold and this is how it puts out the fire.

Just about any mechanics garage will have one of these. As you might expect, a CO2 fire extinguisher costs a lot more than an ABC fire extinguisher. A small 5 lb CO2 extinguisher would be more than adequate for your needs. You can probably buy a new one for about $200. Alternatively, you can call the local fire protection companies in your area, and ask them if they have a small (5 lb.) used but reconditioned CO2 extinguisher that they could sell to you. Tell him it's for your personal use and that you will come to their shop to pick it up. (By the way, unless you're keeping a fire extinguisher and a place of business, there's no need or requirement to have any kind of annual service or inspection.) A reconditioned small CO2 extinguisher shouldn't cost any more than $100. ("Reconditioned" simply means that the extinguisher has been used and refilled with more CO2.)

Here's my fire extinguisher layout for my 1787 sqr. ft. home
(1) 4.5lb in the laundry room/kitchen pantry
(1) 4.5lb in my master bedroom closet (farthest part of my house)
(1) 10lb in my garage
(1) 4.5lb AUTOMATIC Flame Defender for the entrance to my safe room (previous owner built it, bought the home not knowing it was there)
(1) 26.4lb Automatic Flame Defender in my garage (sometimes I run a ribbon burner propane forge)
(2) 4.5lb in my SUV's hatchback, put out two vehicle fires (not mine)
Why so many? racing to get a fire extinguisher when a fire starts can be the difference between your house burning down, or saving the house and contents. Plus if you have pets, especially a feline, having a fire extinguisher close is never a bad thing.

It’s advertised as a ten pound Fire Extinguisher, but I can’t find that in the pictures here on the labels, but other answers are stating it’s only 5 pounds? So who knows, we needed 10 pound!
