How am I Smart?: A Parent's Guide to Multiple Intelligences

Because it worked in my son William!
My than 9 year old son William, and I read it and he learn to swim in 2 days winning the school's swimming contest! He learn he was intelligent in a very COOL and unique way... BODY SMART!We created him an imaginary world call "Doodle City" where he is the mayor and the main Ninja. He has an imaginary dog call "Super Dog" whose heck of a Ninja as well. And we were able to overcome some part of the domestic violence that we were going thru thanks to being good at moves and Ninjas... Emotionally only, oh details!By the way, he was devouring this book with me! English is not my first language and William's vocabulary is also not at the level of this book, so we put a lot of effort to search words and understand concepts... But we did it!He totally forgot to tell me abut the swimming contest at school for over 3 months and his dad took the papers you usually sign to let kids participate at school, his dad has "power of control" and he will take over any school material, even homework he will take and get my son in a lot of trouble. That was our context and that's why I love the refreshing to our soul that this book did to my son!So, William came to me 2 days before the contest with this words "I'm the best Ninja in my classroom and I'm definitely better than you! (I boast about being the best Ninja on my family, because I took martial arts thru most of my childhood and I still can kick pretty), than he said "I'm ready to learn how to swim!" And I was more lost than anything about the swimming deal, yet I was crazy excited to hear my fearful and insecure son, sounding just like a real man!Yeah, that's what this book did to us... Empowered us, gave us hope, got us in an adventure and unify us... After all, we are both cool Ninjas and heck of body smart people and I'm not apologizing for it! Lol

Helps identify your child's giftedness
I'm interested in the Meyers Briggs Type Inventory and all such personality tests. A retired teacher friend advised me to look up the Glasser Therory but I really have to work hard to sit down for any length of time to read anything and the Glasser book was too technical. How Am I Smart was simpler. It's from a parent or teacher's perspective. I didn't have to study anything and could only read about each separate gift as I felt lead when I wanted to. Children change so much so quickly but I'm convinced that personality preferences are set and need to not only be encouraged and tempered to a point of balance as well.

Excellent book to discover for yourself what your child's intellegences ...
Excellent book to discover for yourself what your child's intellegences are -- there can be more than one andthen you can nurture them in those.I have two granddaughters and when I read this amazing book - I could easily determine what theirs wereand learned about how I wasn't also nurturing them - so adjusted it and so happy to be able toeducate them in this way. For instance, the youngest granddaughter never stops moving - she is justa wiggy worm and sometimes we found ourselves saying to her, "stop moving!" but found out that ispart of her intellegience - and how it will become who she is - she is 'body intelligent' and you can learnwhat that means. VERY GOOD to have this knowledge. You also learn about yourself as well and will learn why you are the way you are and it will increase yourconfidence and make you aware of why you are the way you are in a very natural way!I recommend this book to everyone who has a part to play in children's lives. :)

Spot on - very compelling - Thank you Kathy!!!!
I first heard Dr. Kathy Koch on a Focus on the Family broadcast back in February of this year. I became an instant fanand got the Kindle version of How Am I Smart? Kudos to Kathy for taking Dr. Howard Gardner's academic work and applying it to a Christian worldview with refreshing insight and inspiration. This book give fresh expression to Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go; and even when he is old he will not depart from it." We are all God "wired" uniquely as a fingerprint and snowflake; "fearfully and wonderfully made" so says the Psalmist (Ps 139:14)I am rereading to mine all the gems.Educators are challenged to go beyond the "Word" and "Logic" smarts that so dominate our institutional systems and label our smart children otherwise. Could it be that "bullying" and school violence would be diminished with application of this knowledge? One last suggestion. The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman would be a profound addition to How Am I Smart?

Paid for new, received used.
I paid $16.77 for, what I assumed was, a new book. I received a book with bent pages and notes/markings all inside of it. The used books were priced around $2-5 so I paid significantly more to receive a new one with intentions to gift it to someone when I finish.

Awesome insight on not only my child but myself.
I had asked in a home school group on how to figure out our daughters learning style and her passion and they talked of this book.I looked into the book, read the reviews and bought the Kindle edition and really love it. It is Christian based which is not a problem for me at all. I am not done with the book yet but not only is it helping me to see How she is smart but I also see myself in the "Smarts" listed and how they were not enhanced or appreciated as a child. It is easy to look at our children and see their "Smarts" in that they can read or get an A in math, but we are not accustomed to looking at all the different ways we can learn, where are strengths are and how to enhance the ones that are not as strong. It is an easy read and really opened my eyes to how to look at children.

A fake book!
This book advertises itself as a smart book, written by Dr. Such, explaining the well known scientific theory of Multiple Intelligences, as it relates to learning. Well... It starts with... "I'm grateful for God's presence in my life, as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." And it goes on with God here, God there... and ends with "To God be the glory". Is says enough of the book. A complete fake!
