Can this be charged with a USB power bank?

NO. USB charging is NOT supported. Furthermore, the entire charging CRADLE is required for charging, same as other Standard Horizion radios I've seen. not convenient for traveling light on the go :(

I noticed there are 2 versions - nx890 and hx890e. i reside in malaysia. is there a difference ?

Both radios will operate the same anywhere in the world. The only differences between the HX890 and the HX890E are as follows: HX890 FCC and IC certified for sales into the US and Canada HX890E CE certified for sales into Europe

Does this unit allow for aa or aaa batteries to be used instead of lithium? what happens if your in a life raft for several days /weeks??

The Standard Horizon Alkaline Battery Case f is included in the accessory kit that comes with the radio. it takes 5-AAA alkaline batteries, not included. I have been using the Duracell copper clad alkaline batteries and the Duracell Quantum AAA Alkaline Batteries. Both are long lasting, All-Purpose AAA batteries for use in the Standard Horizon HX890 handheld marine radio. I have not seen much of a difference between battery types.

I already have a matrix gx3000s in my boat with my mmsi in it, do i still need to put my mmsi into my new hx890 ?

If you plan on using it on the boat it is a good idea to put the mmsi into the radio. And heaven forbid if you ever need to abandon your boat this is the perfect radio to take with you. Required, no -good boating practice says yes.
