Calibrated Tamper Pressure 53mm for Coffee and Espresso

I bought this to use with my breville espresso machine, I don’t like the plastic one that came with it so this is a great alternative. Nice and heavy feeling. I haven’t had any issues with it so far.

Like others have said, the main two problems are - it 'sticks' when you press it in. This isn't actually a problem in use, because it only does this if you're not pushing down straight. You can also fix the issue by disassembling it and putting a bit of canola oil or similar on the sliding parts to lubricate them. - it's not calibrated correctly. I tested mine by just pressing it into a bathroom scale. I was getting ~35 pounds upon fulling pressing. You don't need an exact 30 pounds for tamping, you just need consistency, which is what you'll get.

Much better than the Breville tamper. Better fit, deeper sides (insures flat puck) and 30# spring works perfectly. There is a little internal roughness as you press but not a functional issue.

I've had an espresso maker for about a year and resisted buying the spring loaded tamper because that's not what the pros use. I finally figured out that I'm not a pro and maybe this might be a good thing. Well, it is a good thing. The consistency in tamping has made a tremendous difference in the consistency of the brew. The tamper doesn't click like a torque wrench, but it is easy to feel when it has bottomed out so that is not a problem. I also have not checked the actual force exerted, but that does not matter - it's the consistency that makes all the difference. I can pull a perfect morning double with my eyes closed (which is how I do it every morning anyway).

I have a Breville Barista Express which is a nice machine (see my separate review for it) and it comes with a tamp that is held into the machine by a magnet. To be able to have the tamp fit into the machine and have it held in by magnet until you need it the tamp has a very small handle. The handle is too small for my large hand and I am not able to grip it well enough for it to be useful. I was not able to use the Breville tamp to press hard enough to make a decent espresso. I looked at a number of tamps on Amazon and this one looked like it would do the best job. I have been using it for several months and I am very pleased with it. The design is well suited to applying enough pressure to compact the grounds and its heavy weight disk and comfortable handle make it easy to use. The spring loaded handle lets you know when you have applied enough pressure. I am very pleased with this tamper and highly recommend it.

Fantastic! The build quality is high! Remember not to wash under water or the spring might jam, wipe clean and re-oil if needed. Perfect latte tamp!!!!

Looks nice. Feels heavy. However I thought by 'calibrated' it meant I push down until the end of the spring and that's the perfect and consistent tamp each time. This doesn't appear to be the case, it's way too heavy and my home coffee machine takes ages extracting. Coffee tasted yuck. So don't buy this expecting that I suppose. Still have to manually tamp.
