Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology

This is an excellent reference book. It is a bit much to use as a textbook as it has more more of an encyclopedia feel to it. Most chapters cite about 500 sources but can be as much as 1400 to give you an idea of the extent of the information condensed in this book. Key characteristics of bacteria are listed in charts in each chapter and some identification schemes are provided. This is clearly a text dedicated to bacteria (15 of 24 chapters). The remaining chapters are broader in their scope and cover things such as general microbiology practices, mycology, viruses, and parasitology.

A good comprehensive test concerning all aspects of microbiology. There is a very useful section of photographs and graphics which demonstrate the rich variety of microorganisms that might be seen in a laboratory. This is a very good text with extensive detail for any level of college / university education and beyond. However, this text is large and heavy, which means that is stays on my shelf in my room instead of travelling with me to school.

I bought this book as a reference for the board certification exams in medical technology. It answered every question I needed to find an answer to and so much more. I passed my exams and I'm still using this book. If I need in-depth descriptions of an organism, it's all there. Medical technologists or students, you won't be disappointed with this book.

Excelente libro

Very good book, but very very heavy. Almost gave myself a hernia trying to lug it to school every day. Ended up just leaving it at home and using the library copy while at school and mine at home. It has anything and everything about microbiology and virology. Extremely in depth. Maybee too much so? Can be tedious to read from cover to cover.

I have just begun to unpack all the meat in this volume. It will be a great reference for a long time to come.

This book is huge and heavy. It is a good reference book but as a textbook for an MLT program it is not so good. The chapters are all very detailed and very long. It is presented in a very dry tone. Specimen views are discussed but you have to flip to the back to find the photos in the appendix. There are no photos directly on the page where the information is being presented. The book could be smaller or lighter if the appendix were eliminated and the photos were among the text. I find flipping to find the image in the back of the book very distracting to the flow of reading. I am not able to carry this book with me to study during the day because it is so heavy. This is a book to keep on the shelf.
