is this model the same as the avancece model with same model number?

There are two versions of this model - the Viva 9630 is the ANALOG and a little larger (basket is 9x9) than the Avance 9650 basket is 8.5x8.5) which is DIGITAL If your an advanced Air Fryer user and are familiar with Philips Air Fryers, the analog model offers a little more space and requires you to set time/temp. If you're new to Philips and new to air frying go for the Avance and avoid heart ache of burned/dry/raw food.

I have what i believe to be an older version of the xxl digital fryer. the pan only contains 1, deep, four sectioned area. this new one has 2 layers?

Yes, there are two layers. There is an insert below the basket that channels grease and drippings into another similar looking 'star' chamber below it. Both are removable as is the entire basket holder. It's sometimes difficult to get theses 'star' plates out. The slits in the top plate are very narrow. I don't think this particular model has an 'earlier' version. It's relatively new - hard to find 8½ inch pans at this point.
