Incredible WiFi coverage
After much searching for a solution to our poor WiFi signal in our extension I settled on the nighthawk x6 , I'm currently with talktalk and have the latest talktalk router which gave great coverage through the whole of our 4 bed house however the signal droped to one bar in the extension which happens to be the room we spend most time in. Considered a WiFi mesh solution but it seemed an expensive solution, then I researched WiFi extenders which were a lot cheaper but after reading several reviews it seems that the WiFi speed drops by at least half when using these and also they have a separate network unlike the mesh systems which would mean having to manually change between extender and talktalk router connections when going from room to room. So then I found the Netgear nighthawk, this had the benefits of a mesh system that compliments my talktalk router rather than replacing it. Also as Netgear states it manages to maintain full speed by using its Tri band technology the extra band is crucial in feeding back data to the talk talk router without affecting signal or speed performance, Tri band technology is usually only found on high end mesh systems like the Netgear orbi system. The setup of the nighthawk was easy just press the wps button on the nighthawk and talktalk router ,then they both connect showing three solid white lights. It is important to place the nighthawk in between the area of the talktalk router and the poor signal area, in my case this was at the entrance / inside of the extension at the top end of the hallway and my talktalk router was at the front door at the opposite end of the hallway by the front door. If you go too far away the nighthawk router goes to amber which is still classed as a good connection. Following setup I had full signal bars and near enough full speed at the furthest point of the house in the corner of the extension. In fact I went in to the garden at the shed a further 15 m away n I got 70% signal and approx 90% speed! A great product that looks nice with no unsightly arials sticking out. The cost is at 119 and for that price it gives you a mesh network maintaining the same ssid and password as the talktalk router and gives full coverage and speed operating seamlessly from room to room highly recommended worth every penny it utilizes all of its Tri bands x3 to make sure all devices are spread out on various bands giving full bandwidth ,perfect for gaming and steaming hi definition content seamlessly.

Great for a month, now repeatedly drops out
At first, the device was great! My network speed was fantastic in the attic of my house and I could now upload my game projects to my remote server much faster. Now, nearly 2 months (1 month and a half) into owning this device, it has absolutely dropped. It can't pick up signal as well any more and it can't be on longer than 30 minutes to an hour otherwise devices will randomly be limited to like 20KB/s for either 1 second or until restart! The device as a whole is questionable. The web portal is severely lacking. No log (Come on, this is a basic feature from TP-Link!), You can't force the extender to be off at certain times, 5GHz Wifi is limited to DFS channels 100-128 (Why?!), You can't modify the DHCP settings, You can't set what network the Ethernet ports should use (TP-Link allows you to make it use the 2.4GHz network), and you cant make the LEDS turn off between certain times (it's ONLY on/off, which means you have to manually do this every time)! I get some of these are nitpicky but how hard is it to just make this thing consumer friendly?! I have it in a place where it's okay yet I get blinded by 4 bright LEDs at night like come on. Overall, I would have given this product 3/4 stars if it didn't deteriorate after a MONTH. Whilst I am contacting support as of writing this review, whatever they do will not change my opinion on this product, even if they replace it. The firmware of this product makes this near unusable and the fact that a product this big has specs and firmware worse than TP-Link products that were released at similar times, are smaller, and similar price, makes me less inclined to ever buy NETGEAR products again.

Easy to setup, compatible with Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6
I have a Netgear R8000 Nighthawk X6 tri-band router attached to my cable modem, but was struggling to get a 5Ghz WiFi signal >40-50% strength to the room behind the ceramic tiled bathroom. I had previously tried a TP-Link extender but found this unreliable, and incapable of streaming between PCs. This WiFi extender has a smart setup which replicates your existing WiFi SSIDs and passwords and uses the DHCP on the router to assign an IP address (I have reserved this on the router). I have placed it in the hall next to the bathroom, halfway between the Router and the room with the devices I am trying to connect. As you can see from the image, I get good signal strength and speed (fast.com reports 190Mbps on the desktops - previously I was getting a max of 60Mbps) . I am still exploring various configurations, you can set a static IP address on the extender rather than use the DHCP, I am not sure how this affects the IP address lease duration on the router. In this scenario it will drop device connections if the IP address lease on the router connection expires, and it will take 10-15 minutes or so to reconnect. I don't know it this happens when you use DHCP. Even if DHCP changes the extender IP address you can connect to it with mywifiext.local. You can also re-name the extended SSIDs if you want to clearly identify extended connections. It will also support the X6 routers smart connect (single SSID tri-band) feature. Like the TP-link I had previously, the Nighthawk EX7700 aliases the MAC addresses of the connected devices before forwarding the connections to the router. It does it by replacing the first three OUI octets of the device MAC address with those from the EX7700. Unlike the Tp-Link extender, the Nighthawk EX7700 has had no problem streaming (Baldur's Gate) from my gaming PC in the back room to the TV media PC in the lounge at 60FPS. I got this extender in Sept 2024 for £69, which made it economically comparable with other solutions, such as putting in sufficient cabling to move the router location.

The Great Extender
This is a great Wi-Fi extender. It was easy to set up near the router using the app on iPhone and then move it further away. The Tri band seems to work well with a dedicated channel back to the router. The other 2 channels 2.4ghz and 5ghz are not obvious if you opt for the ‘one’ setting which means the extender gives you the frequency best suited to where you are in the house. It seems to be pretty fast and up to 866 Mbps. The app is good for set up but pretty minimal. I would have liked the ability to switch off bright indicator leds on app but you can do it on the web page for the nighthawk. It seems stable so far with just one reset (maybe due to ISP). Sometimes had to refresh Wi-Fi on iPhone by turning Wi-Fi off and on. But otherwise ok. I didn’t place the Nighthawk too far away, just in the hall with router in front room, as quality dropped off the further I went away using the indicator lights on the device. But it pumps out the signal to cover 2000 square feet I think. Anyway I get full strength Wi-Fi through out the house. All in all very pleased with the nighthawk, much better than previous ac1200 extender. It looks like a stealth jet and that’s how it works stealthily and fast in the background.

Pretty easy to set up, seamless one WiFi throughout house, great range
I purchased this mesh extender as my existing old plug in booster was failing and dropping off a lot through the day, meaning I was losing VPN connection at work and using a lot of data on my phone. This does the job perfectly and I know have great signal throughout the house, with just one WiFi network to connect to for all devices. The only issue I had setting up was that I couldn't use the app because my phone would not connect to the Netgear_EXT network, it appeared but wouldn't connect and just kept throwing back an error, so I ended up using the WPS button to connect to my main router, and then plugging into my PC upstairs via ethernet to view set up in a browser and ensure the mesh was working and the existing signal had been successfully extended. Not sure if it's something on my Android phone or the device itself, but all working fine now!

Strange device
Having the same SSID name and password all over the house seems like a great idea, IF it works. When it doesn't it's unclear what you're actually connected to, the router or the extender. It worked at times and with certain devices. Had a strong signal but no internet connection. NEVER worked with my Amazon 4K firestick. Like most of these devices I found the setup app "clunky" with some sections not working at all. Expensive for something so unreliable so had no choice but to return it. Maybe I just got a bad one.

Frustrating and unreliable
Setup wasn't too difficult, but required perseverance and time (a recurring theme with this device). The unit takes a long time (much longer than a router, about 5 mins I think) to boot up. Once it was ready the WPS setup didn't seem to work, so I used the app. I would advise against this (use the web interface) as it insists on you signing up for a Netgear account. This took a while, with a few retries being needed, but worked. Interestingly it finished by telling me that a software update was available - then saying that it had failed (I tried several times without success). When I logged in using the web interface it showed that the unit was using the latest software version... The app does not allow you to do much more than the initial configuration, you'll need to use the web interface to set everything up properly - so you might as well use that from the start. The web interface is quite straightforward to use, although I had to find the unit's IP address to log into it, but the options are limited. You can set up two wifi networks (2.4GHz & 5GHz) and not much else. Although the unit has two 5GHz channels one of these is reserved for communication with the router - even if it is connected via ethernet cable. Making a change to any setting results in a wait of several minutes when you hit the "save" button (did I mention that you need to be patient with this device?). It is also worth noting that the 5GHz wifi only uses channels from 100-140. Some devices (notably Amazon Firesticks) can't use these, so they would be restricted to the 2.4GHz frequency. There is supposed to be an option to set operating times, but this remained greyed out for me and I couldn't activate it. In addition to all this; - my unit rebooted, for no apparent reason, several times within hours of installation. This resulted in several minutes of disruption to any devices connected to it each time - long enough for the family members involved to find me and complain... - trying to connect Chromebooks to the unit caused a DNS issue, causing them to lose contact with the internet. I had to disconnect the unit and reboot the router to fix this. - when the unit was connected a large number of unknown entries appeared in my router's "connected devices" list. Apparently the extender creates these "virtual" MAC identities. - the unit I received from Amazon Warehouse had apparently already been registered with the manufacturer, preventing me from registering for warranty support With all of the other, cheaper, options out there and the issues above I won't be keeping the Netgear EX7700.
