Read this before send them back...
This is my first pair of Thorogood work boots. I have worn other brands of work boots in the different styles from pull-on & moc toe, non steel toe & steel toe, wedge / heel ect.. Some pairs where great, some where garbage...some lasted a couple years, some barely 6 months. I decided to try these from Thorogood and glad I did...but please read on. When I first tried them on they were quite uncomfortable and had some bad pressure points on the right boot - which felt a little tighter and narrower than the seemingly more spacious left boot. It was enough of a difference I double checked to confirm that they both were the wider EE size I ordered! I was a bit worried at that initial point that these were going to require a rough break in period...but I was wrong. I took the (high quality) insoles out and wore them for a couple days without them. This solved the pressure points and tightness I initially felt from the right boot. I wore them for a day and then oiled them. Then wore them for a 2nd day. On the 3rd day put the insoles back in and they felt VERY comfortable...no tightness, pressure points or issues. At this point I knew I could wear them for an 8+ hour work day and would be enjoying having them on vs counting the hours/minutes to get them off. This worked for me so figured I would share it and maybe help other buyers - and the initial impulse to return these boots. Everyone's feet are different so this won't solve everyone's issues (especially those with wider feet - the EE doesn't really seem wide enough) but this made a night and day difference for me and made them wearable right away without the discomfort of a long break-in period. These are great boots and I am very happy with them so far. ***1 Year Update: Boots have held up great after a year of hard use. I recently bought a 2nd pair with the wedge sole and love them as well.*** Hope this review helps!

Updated: amazing
Update 8/1/2021: Most comfortable boots I’ve ever worn. Went back to the original insoles and they’re fine. Man I love these boots. Update after 3 days of wear: So as these broke in they got less comfortable, I put some Keen high arch supports in today though and boom, instantly now I get it. These are great shoes. Not knocking the boots for this I do have weird feet. I haven’t done much outdoor work with these yet as I have some inside jobs this time of year but they’re being treated like work boots daily and they’re not flinching. Clean up really well too. Original Review: These replaced some emergency Walmart steel toes I got out of necessity (literally standing at self checkout in Walmart in my socks lol) which lasted 4 months and those replaced some Redwing 3507’s that lasted 3 years and I absolutely loved. But the Walmart boots went from fine to my right pinky toe is screaming in one day and when I went to the Redwing store the next morning before work they didn’t open until 10am. So I ran heavy machinery in some sneakers all weekend, ordered these, and am wearing them today just around the house/errands. So first off I do have pretty odd feet, high arches, narrow arches, size 13 men’s, and weirdly long toes. So when I say this toebox is large it is quite large. Which coupled with a snug mid section around my arches made for an awkward first impression, but as I get used to the fit I do like it. They look really nice. I will beat the $,&* out of these whether I want to or not so that’s not really a big deal to me but I was suprised by how nice they look for steel toes. Like I could wear these Easter Sunday to church no problem until they get marked up and all from work. As long as I get 2 years plus out of these I will keep this at 5 stars, maintenance will consist of letting them dry between wearings (crucial for all leather), occasional leather cream if Im thinking about it and that’s about it. Otherwise I’ll update.

Solid work boot
I bought these work boots as a second choice. I wanted another pair of Chippewa #20081 6" steel toe work boots with a round toe. However, I needed them sooner than later as I had worn a hole through my previous Chippewa boots is said style (took me 18 months to achieve that feat). The Thorogood boots were also nearly $50 cheaper on Amazon. So after much deliberation I am the proud owner of these awesome boots. And they are pretty awesome. Very nice fit and finish. I will say they seemed a little narrow for a 13(D) when I first slipped them on, but once I walked around in them they felt fine. I normally don't need wide shoes, but some who are on the fence and sometimes wear a (EE) might want to consider going for that as they do run a tiny bit narrow in my opinion. Other than that I have no complaints so far. They do require some breaking in to get comfortable. But all good boots do. I will update this post with any failures or milestones. I absolutely loved my Chippewa boots and it was difficult to switch brands so even though I'm now a fan of Thorogood boots I'm still rocking my waxed leather Chippewa laces with the American flag medallion at the bottom. Best boot laces available in my opinion. Update: worked 60+ hours this week and these boots are every bit worth the price. I won't go as far as some people saying that there is virtually no break in. I think that's probably an exaggeration. They are comfy don't get me wrong. But I still find they have some relaxing to do and certain angles on the forklift still cause a little discomfort. Overall I'm almost ready to say I'd buy these over my previous Chippewa's. But I'll have to see how they stack up durability wise before I can make that call.

Comfortable but beware of sizing
After ordering 3 different of this boot I finally found size that fit, 1.5 less than my normal boot fit. Usually wear 11.5 to 12. The difference between 11 and 11.5 was almost non existent. Initial fit is snug in width which I prefer but many don’t, toe box feels about right, not snug but not sloppy either. I replaced the insoles right away as I prefer a high arch, factory insoles do have decent arch support it felt like just not as much as I prefer. My heel moves a bit more than preferred but once things break in I think that’ll subside. Overall feels like a well made boot, and a great plus is it’s a USA made boot. Hopefully they’ll last a few years at least. I’ve worn Doc Martens Ironbridge work boots for about 15-20yrs, which were less than half this price and lasted strong of 2yrs. Wouldn’t have switched but they seem to have paused or stopped production of them in last few yrs. Compared to the Doc’s these seem light, stiff, and a little less comfortable straight outta the box. Docs didn’t require any break in generally, these will definitely. Will try to edit after a little longer term wear and post-break in.

Break in period caused gout flare up
Worst boots I've ever had. These boots took 6 weeks to break in And have caused my gout to flare up 3 times during that time. I bought these because internet people said they feel like slippers. That is not the case, new insoles were a must and comfort just isn't there. I feel they push me to walk on the outside of my feet because there isn't enough ankle support. If I didn't have these all wrecked up from work I would of sent them back weeks ago. Definitely need something better.

Disappointed
The boots came smothered in some kind of thick brown polish that stank to high heaven. It was so bad I couldn’t keep them in the house. This is my fourth identical pair and probably twelfth total pair of Thorogood’s and this stuff is not indicative of my prior experience with any of their products, much less a natural crazy horse finish. The stitching and construction is consistent with my other pairs and I don’t think they’re counterfeit or anything. They fit as they should and the leather appears to be high quality and proper grain. They’re breaking in as expected and fit as they should. After a week with no subsidence of the smell I scrubbed them down with saddle soap and they’re a lot better. Time will tell if they patina as they should. I will buy my next pair in person, and if this isn’t a one time fluke I’m probably done with the brand.
