Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic disorder that is common among women of reproductive age. Diet and lifestyle changes have been shown to balance hormones and promote better overall health. Although dietary changes have been proven to be effective, they can often seem too restrictive, resulting in women finding it difficult to sustain the diet or finding their health further diminished because their diet falls out of balance, and cutting out certain foods or food groups has caused them to become deficient in key nutrients. In her new book, A Balanced Approach to PCOS, Melissa Groves Azzaro, RDN, LD, an award-winning integrative registered dietitian, offers women a new approach to treating PCOS that is sustainable, all-inclusive, and provides proven results. Melissa’s approach is straightforward and sensible—perfectly balanced, nutrient-dense meals that are designed to address the root causes of PCOS. Each meal features a perfect ratio of protein, fat, and fiber that will help improve symptoms without feelings of deprivation. Melissa’s recipes are customizable and target the primary factors contributing to PCOS: insulin resistance, inflammation, and hormone and gut imbalances. A Balanced Approach to PCOS includes: A guide to identifying and understanding the symptoms of PCOS An explanation of each food group and how it helps alleviate the symptoms of PCOS 16 weeks of meal prep recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for busy women Bonus smoothie, snack, and dessert recipes Time-saving tips, shopping lists, and more! Melissa is for all women looking for a long-term plan to manage PCOS. She is a thought-leader and nutrition expert who has already helped hundreds of women improve their symptoms without spending hours in the kitchen or sacrificing the foods they love.

Waste of money
Not what I was expecting. The layout, graphics/pics, and info are excellent. However, its just basic sensible eating without carbs!!! Also, when it said 16wk meal planner I envisioned 7 x breakfast, lunch, dinner ideas per week - not just two of each. I like salmon but not 7 days a week and seriously, who wants to eat the same meal 7 days in a row. Each meal seems to have protein powder in it too (yuck). Also, i dislike muffins. I'm going to stick with the Fast 800/Michael Mosley books - much more choice, weight loss and blood sugar control guaranteed. Waste of money for me.

Disappointed
The book wasn’t what I expected. When it said there’s meal plans for many weeks, they are not ideal. For each week, you get staple foods which come in most meals. For example, one week - you have salmon for break, lunch and dinner for the majority of the week. The following week is the same with another protein. And each week, there’s only 2 dinner options and 2 lunch so your food is awfully repetitive.I read through it and never opened it again.Disappointing

GREAT
Great for anyone newly diagnosed with PCOS to understand meal planning. I love that the book covers seasons and has a shopping list to align to the season!

Dealing With The Root Cause
Though this book just came out, the moment I received it, I read it front to back. What I appreciate most about the author's approach is that she does not restrict foods and she recommends a whole, balanced diet. Living with PCOS for the last 10 years has been frustrating. Doctors telling me to take medications, lose weight, etc. but not really giving me the knowledge or tools how. Her book is a great tool and intro into understanding the "how". I can tell a lot of thought was put into the layout and break down of the book. Functional medicine is the primary backdrop of the content. She breaks down PCOS into 4 root causes which spell out what people with PCOS need to change in order to minimize their symptoms over time. This book breaks recipes into seasons and weeks. Each week comes with a set grocery list and a recommended prep day. I consider myself a novice cook and these recipes are easy to follow and delicious. Even my picky fiance has loved them! The reason why I think it works is because I live a very stressful lifestyle and each recipe has prep time and cook time which most are 30 min or less. I am currently beginning my PCOS lifestyle change journey after finally feeling fed up. I have not exercised in months and I currently work a 60 hour work week. After eating the PCOS recipes intermittently over the last few weeks, both in this recipe book and through Melissa's PCOS Root Cause Roadmap Program, I have lost 8lbs. and I feel great. My non-scale victories include having more energy and less stress. My future Mother-In-Law asked me about my successes, looked through the book and within minutes also ordered a copy. I cannot recommend this type of recipe book enough. It just makes sense. One last side note - read a review below and I want to point out one thing... eating one type of animal protein for an entire week is not 100% asinine. I eat chicken all the time and the author clearly states in the book that there are plenty of substitution options. I understand eating salmon multiple times in a week may not be ideal for some individuals, but there are other fish options like tilapia and shrimp that may be a great anti-inflammatory food substitute as well. Food for thought - pun intended!

Amazing Resource for Individuals with PCOS!
I absolutely LOVE the recipes in this book! I was looking for something to help provide some inspiration for balanced meals for individuals with PCOS, being recently diagnosed myself and currently seeing my own dietitian for management of the condition, and this book is perfect for that. All meals are organized by season, so you can purchase ingredients that are at their freshest and rotate through different types of foods for lots of diversity without getting bored. It comes complete with a weekly shopping list and meal prep guidelines, meaning, I DON'T have to think about it. One less stressor for me (Sigh of relief). The book also teaches you about different foods that can give you more bang for your buck in terms of benefits for individuals with PCOS (e.g. I didn't realize that turnip had so many pluses!). All in all, I like the simplicity (I don't want to buy 6 different meats in one week, that's expensive) and it has my priorities in mind as someone with PCOS. Thank you Melissa for your wonderful book and your desire to help and educate people.

Useful ideas
Some of the recipes are repetitive. May be helpful if you aren't an experienced cook or used to preparing meals from scratch.
