Hieroglyphs That Make Sense
'Egyptian Hieroglyphs' is not a dry academic textbook, it walks you through the language step by step in a way that’s clear, practical, and actually fun to follow. What I liked is how hands-on it is. You’re not just memorizing symbols, you’re learning how and why they work, then immediately using them to translate real inscriptions. Seeing actual cartouches, temple texts, and offering formulas broken down sign by sign made everything understanable. The explanations of grammar and reading direction are helpful, and the practice exercises keep you engaged without feeling overwhelmed.

Learn the ancient language!
I picked up "Egyptian Hieroglyphs" because I’ve always been curious about what the symbols actually mean. This book made learning hieroglyphs feel possible! What I liked right away is how the learning is structured. It starts with the basics, like the uniliteral alphabet, then moves into biliterals and triliterals. The explanations are pretty clear and the reading direction rules finally clicked for me after going through the examples. The grammar sections were easier than I expected. Things are explained in a way that makes sense. It's cool that now I can actually learn this ancient language that always felt like a magical code.

Great for history buffs
It was very interesting to learn not only how to decipher symbols, but how to read and understand what the ancient Egyptians truly intended to say. The manual teaches how to form sentences, interpret offerings and prayers, understand inscriptions, and grasp the meaning behind the words in temple stone.

A very cool work that makes learning to write and read hieroglyphs seem manageable, the author does a great job making all of this very easy. The book includes a bunch of exercises and lessons that are accessible to any level of learner. You can work through this at your own pace and go back and forth as you need to. Good stuff.

Fun and educational
I've always been curious about about Egyptian hieroglyphs and wondered what they really meant, and this book really helped to teach how to read the language, how the sounds fit together, how sentences are structured, how determinatives clarify meaning, and how real inscriptions are put together. The exercises were fun to try and the progression from simple signs to full translations works. I enjoyed it and thought it was an educational book.

Learning through exercises
Such an interesting topic! "Egyptian Hieroglyphs" felt like a step-by-step guide, which I appreciated as I am always curious about anything Egyptian. This book was very much an exercise book to complete steps and gain understanding. I did miss phonetic pronunciations where appropriate, unless of course this is something we don't know? Another thing that was a bit rough for me was the overall layout, it could use a polish. Overall though, a nice introduction.

In 2018, I visited EMC - the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. I still remember the mesmerizing effect those millennia-old artifacts had on me. While I was admiring the craftsmanship of skilled ancient artists, I had to rely on translations of the hieroglyphs and hope they were accurate. In May, I plan to go on a 10-day scuba-diving safari along the Red Sea coast of Egypt and will also take time to visit the temples and monuments in Luxor. Having "Egyptian Hieroglyphs: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide" with me will significantly enhance my understanding when I stand before the tomb of Tutankhamen, stroll through the Temple of Karnak, or walk along the Valley of the Kings. Previously, I read the "Book of Enoch" by Mohamed Elshenawy. The author repeats the feat of explaining complicated topics in an easy-to-understand way, also in this book. The table of the most common unilateral signs featured in the book is helpful. The logograms and phonograms are explained in detail. The exercise of a structural breakdown of the signs, leading to a step-by-step translation, is highly informative. The list of International Museums with Hieroglyphic Collections is a well-thought-out addition. I, of course, realize that reading this book will not make me an Egyptologist, but still, it's a step toward increasing my awareness of this mysterious civilization. Alone, the basic fact that the Egyptian sign language is originally called 'Medu Netjer' and not as I thought, 'Hieroglyphs', showcases that there is much, much more to learn.

I wasn't really looking to learn about hieroglyphs(!) but when this book popped up as a suggestion I was intrigued! It's a fascinating system and I learned things I didn’t know such as it has different reading directions and to identify the verb in the sentence first. A good introduction to the topic

I’ve always been fascinated by Egyptian hieroglyphs, but every time I tried to learn them, it felt overwhelming. This book surprised me by how clear and structured it is. It doesn’t just show symbols, it explains the logic behind them and slowly builds your confidence. What I liked most is working with real inscriptions instead of isolated signs. It requires focus, but it’s genuinely rewarding. A great choice for anyone who wants to move beyond admiration and actually start reading the ancient language.
