Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) was one of the last great artists in the ukiyo-e tradition . Literally meaning “pictures of the floating world,” ukiyo-e was a particular genre of art that flourished between the 17th and 19th centuries and came to characterize the Western world’s visual idea of Japan. In many ways images of hedonism, ukiyo-e scenes often represented the bright lights and attractions of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) : beautiful women, actors and wrestlers, city life, and spectacular landscapes. Though he captured a variety of subjects, Hiroshige was most famous for landscapes, with a final masterpiece series known as “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo” (1856–1858), which depicted various scenes of the city through the seasons, from bustling shopping streets to splendid cherry orchards. This reprint is made from one of the finest complete original sets of woodblock prints belonging to the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo. It pairs each of the 120 illustrations with a description, allowing readers to immerse themselves in these beautiful, vibrant vistas that became paradigms of Japonisme and inspired Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Art Nouveau artists alike, from Vincent van Gogh to James McNeill Whistler. Gorgeous!
The book size is a tad small to do full justice to the artist, but Taschen's production values are impeccable otherwise. It's a treat to feast one's eyes on the gorgeous art.

not worth the price
The print quality and the paper used do not do justice to the art work. Waste of money. Looks like a pirated copy of the original.

Good book but not worth the price. And seems fake cause of the printed in China tag
Book is nice. But this isn't the orginal , it's a Chinese printed version. The original is printed by taschen but not in China.

Un chef d'œuvre de l'art japonais à la portée de toutes les bourses
Il s'agit en ce qui me concerne du 21 ème ouvrage de la collection Taschen Biblioteca Universalis que je possède. C'est dire que j'apprécie ce que l'éditeur Taschen me permet de visiter quasi virtuellement. Hiroshige est avec Hokusai le peintre japonais le plus connu en Occident. Cet ouvrage relié, comme toute la collection, sur papier glacé et printed in China, ce qui permet un prix de vente dérisoire de 15 €, comprend 600 pages. Les 100 premières, illustrées et bien commentées en trois langues, constituent une très bonne introduction. C'est l'ouvrage le plus connu d'Hiroshige que Taschen a choisi de présenter dans ce volume, à savoir les 100 vues d'Edo (aujourd'hui Tokyo) dessinées juste avant l'ère Meiji vers 1856-1857. Chacune des 100 vues est présentée ici de manière identique. La première page à gauche donne en japonais le nom de l'estampe qui est représentée sur la page de droite. Ensuite les deux pages suivantes , rédigées en 3 langues, écrites par la spécialiste allemande d'art oriental Mélanie Tade, de l'université d'Heidelberg, donnent une description complète de chacune des 100 vues. Donc 4 pages par vues d'Edo, dessinée par Hiroshige. Pour moi c'est un véritable régal artistique pour me documenter sur une œuvre que je ne connaissais qu'insuffisamment, sinon pas du tout. Un prix aussi bas pour faire la connaissance d'un tel chef d'œuvre, à une époque où l'on parle de confluence des arts, ça ne donne aucune excuse de ne pas l'acquérir tant qu'il est disponible. Dépêchez-vous de l'acheter sur Amazon où vous êtes sûr de le trouver pour l'instant.
