Will this work a heat pump?

make sure you know what your heat pump outdoor thresholds are ... ecobee has a default of 35 I believe .. My heat pump operates at -5 degrees .. I had to manually go in and change mine to keep my aux from going on ...

Does this use the standard wiring for a thermostat or do need an add a wire adapter?

You need a C wire with 22 volts of power at the thermostat. You either have that already...or you can rewire from the furnace if you have 22V C wire power at the furnace... or you can use a plug in 24 volt transformer/c wire adapter to power the thermostat.
