On the 10 gallon version, how far does the intake extend into the aquarium?

Its adjustable, but my normal size and shape 10gal tank requires me to use this without the telescoping tube, and leaves the intake in a perfect place without it! The body itself goes 4in+ into the water so with that extra 6in adjustable tube (that gets almost 12in when extended) it didn't fit in my tank with the 4+in intake section connected

Can this be used for an Axolotl?

Yes. I use that for my axolotl fir about 2 months. No problem. Very good.

Will this model of the Tetra is 45 handle a 55 gallon ok?

The 45 model would not be enough for a 55 gallon tank on its own. Two of them would work, one at each end.
