Mungyo Gallery Soft Pastel Squares Wood Box Set of 72 - Assorted Colors

I purchased this thinking they were oil pastel colors, and they were drawing pastel colors. I have never tried the product and technique before but it truly impressed me to the point that I am now learning how to use them. That is how impressed I was with the product. My mistake made me want to learn from it. The product has a beautiful range of colors that are full of body and the pigment carry very well in the paper ( I use a regular paper at that moment), it blends very nice with other colors and when you touch it the colors, the colors carry very well in your finger as well. The seller did an AWESOME job by wrapping it up! they meant it to be very safe and they won me over. The seller also left me a discount and websites for art groups [how thoughtful], and the product came earlier [AWESOME] I surely will be buying from this seller again, and surely will buy the product again. Ok, I wanted Oil Pastels, my mistake. If you want oil pastels, this ain't them. These are 72 beautiful chalk pastels. These are a cross between soft pastels and nupastels. They are very smooth to work with and has almost no chalk dust. Colors bright and beautiful. I have two different boxes of Senneliers soft chalk pastels, 120 in each box, very dusty, but very beautiful, I also have a box of 96 Prismacolor Nupastels that are a harder and firmer packed chalk pastel. These are my new favorites. They move wherever you want them to. Your hand doesn't get nearly as messy because you have paper around the chalk. Lots of fun to work with.

Do not buy these unless you need OIL pastels. The description is inaccurate, the packaging completely different. I'd give less than 1 star for the hassle of returning!!!

Comprehensive color selection, and well-shipped. These "soft" pastels were only relatively soft (that is, they were not oil pastels, nor were they really hard non-oil pastels), but they included a great selection of colors. It's a fabulous set, especially considering the price. It really got me going with soft pastels.

For fine art purposes, there are 68 (or possibly fewer) usable sticks in this lovely set of colors. It comes with four florescent colors, which will fade. I purchased a box of 36 last year and made a page of swatches, taped it in a south facing window, and left it for three months. Medium purple pink (021) and magenta (022) faded to nearly white. Violet (023) shifted to blue. I found, online, the color chart for Mungyo's set of 200 hand made soft pastels, which reveals that the violet pigment they use is PV3, which is rated as fair in terms of lightfastness. No other colors in the set of 36 faded. These pastels are semi-soft, and very pleasant to use, adhering well to papers that are made specifically for pastels. The full set contains many more earth hues and should be very useful in tandem with my Senneliers for landscapes, although it could use about two more light blues and some lightfast violets. The only truly light blue appears to be a light ultramarine hue. The wooden box is okay for storage, but I wouldn't haul it around to classes or out for plein air work. The sticks are nicely padded with foam, though. A truly good value.

I held off writing a review for these until I had several chances to use them. And I hate to say, I am not impressed. These are allegedly "soft" pastels but I found them to be very hard. They have a good assortment of colors, but I find myself not using them as they do not perform as I wish.

Surprisingly good quality for student use! Buying something cheaper will be frustrating and discouraging to the beginner and is a waste of money! I am a professional artist and use them myself.

Mungyo soft pastels were recommended to me by a very talented artist. The pastels came in a beautiful wood box and have a great variety of colors. However, after diving into pastels, I soon learned that these pastels are not as soft as most soft pastels and do not blend at such. But they are a great learning pastel and I find them very good for my underpainting. They do not fill up the tooth of the paper and lend themselves to an alcohol wash very nicely. I am still quite a novice at pastels so these are a great find for while learning.

My sister loves this set.

Good range of colours - apply easily - like most tools only as good as the user.
