Extra Conditioning Hair Color Remover, 1 Application

This stuff is like magic. Smelly magic. I have light coppery brown hair. Roots are mousy brown, but it naturally sun bleaches to a brassy blond as it grows out. I've been coloring it with lush henna and loved it for years. Then I was having someone laser off freckles and they accidentally singed my hairline along my forehead. Just the first few strands, so it didn't seem like a big deal until they grew back black. Of course, henna won't color black since it doesn't lighten hair. My base color is quite light, so the contrast was very noticeable. I tried to grow out the henna while wearing constant headbands. Then I went to a salon that does a lot of color. My goal was to lighten the strange black hairs and transition towards salon color (vs henna, since henna cant cover black). The stylist bleached a strand test and it turned light copper. So they did a Malibu treatment to lift the henna ab much as possible, followed by a bleach bath). But of course when they bleached my entire head, the lengths turned orange while the roots went blond. I suggested going with orange and tinting it to rose gold or peach, but the colorist insisted on "neutralizing the warm tones." I said okay, as long as it didn't go dark...and left with espresso brown hair steaked with blue-black and dark cherry. I hated it. It clashed with itself and my very fair complexion. It looked like a middle schooler on a goth phase who tried to dye her hair black using natural plant dye that she'd made herself. And the stylist had toned it no less than 3 times, so presumably there was a lot of dye in my hair. While this toning kept happening, i was panicking about "Won't it get too dark?" But couldn't see anything with my head in the sink. The salon wouldn't fit me in for a correction for a couple of weeks. I tried several rounds of clarifying shampoo, but the black wouldn't budge. I seriously considered shaving my head and buying a wig. Then I tried color oops. Sure, it smells like rotten egg. But it really isn't that bad with proper ventilation. Standing under a hot shower for 20 minutes feels like eternity and a huge waste of water. It left my hair dryer than straw. But it got the black and brown disaster off. I can leave the house without a hat on. And I immediately did a deep conditioning mask. My hair feels fine. (I also did olaplex before/after the bleaching.) It probably helps that aside from the henna (which is good for hair, albeit more permanent than the average marriage), my hair hadn't previously been through mistreatment. I don't heat style at all. TBH, the color now isn't ideal. The first few inches (less exposed to henna, if at all) are blond, but unevenly shaded. The lengths are light auburn (past my shoulder blades). I suspect that it's a mix of henna that won't budge and salon dye. I might redo the ends with color oops to remove more of the salon dye. But I am also open to a bob--if I cut off the lengths, and has a colorist tweak the blond, I could have a blond bob. So much better than the black hair monstrosity they had done at the salon. Nothing against black hair, by the way. I actually love it. On people who don't have my complexion and who don't have a weird, streaky black with strands of blue, brown, and merlot.

I have been dying my hair with black box dye once a month for three years now. I put three pictures of how my hair started what it looked like after the first treatment and what it looks like now after the second treatment. I have done two color oops treatments and I can say this stuff really does work. I have very thick and long hair so I had to use three boxes each time. You want to make sure you completely saturate your hair. Also the second round an applied foil to the end and then wrapped everything with a disposable shower cap. The box comes with a cap but I wanted to make sure heat stayed in better. I also added more heat with a blow dryer during the process. Yes you have to make sure you wash your hair with warm/hot water and shampoo and rinse at least four-five times for about 20mins. I also blew dry my hair afterwards to apply more heat. Be prepared for your hair to get dry be prepared for your hair to get extra tangled and knotted. I put leave in conditioning spray and oil in after both times to help. I say overall if you are not wanting to damage your hair with bleach try the color oops yes it will be a process but if you’re wanting to keep your hair healthy it’s a better choice.

I tried this on my reddish hair (naturally brown) and it did take a bit of the red tint out but the REALLY damaged my hair. It felt worse than your typically bleach damage. I had my hair professionally dyed a reddish brown color but hadn’t had any new red added to my hair in at least 2 years (no dye at all in over a year). I was wanting to go neutral so could lighten my hair without so much brassy tone and also try to avoid a lot of bleaching jobs to limit damage. I figured if this didn’t take the color out since it was so old and stayed in my hair for so long that it wouldn’t be damaging and I could just go the bleaching route. It’s made it’s really difficult to lighten as I still have ongoing dryness and damage from this initial product so now bleaching is nerve wracking. I noticed not only dryness but my hair tangles easily and I have way more hair falling out than before.it’s constantly frizzy looking too and so lifeless because I am trying to lighten a bit at a time after how badly this left my hair, it’s a muddled dark blond and almost greenish in parts (not from this product but from how it lightened after I used this and then tried to tone it the red out) I should have just bleached it afterall and had better results if I was gonna end up with damage. I used this in Oct and I am struggling to lighten it and not ruin my hair. I lightened it in Nov but have been trying to repair it before I attempt to try to lighten it anymore. It’s so ugly I don’t take photos or haven’t gone out to see my friends since using this product. I can’t believe this little box has completely changed my life in such a negative way and for so long. It would be one thing if bleach had caused this but knowing that the problem was from this product that maybe lifted the red by a shade wasn’t worth it.

Im giving this 5 stars because it has always worked for me except this time so I thought id warn you all! The photos are before and after using Color Oops on processed(bleached), hair with Arctic Fox Transynvania. It started fading into green and purple which was kind of cool, but really not what I was looking for. Using Dawn dish soap a couple of times did help left it out but ultimately, I knew I would turn to color oops though I did have a suspicion my hair would turn more green because the last time I dyed my hair purple I tried using bleach to get it out and it turned my hair green. 🙃 Color Oops doesnt have ammonia or bleach but I just kind of knew it would struggle to lift this color out. I rinsed my hair for more than 20 minutes, with and without shampoo until the water ran clear. After 10 minutes the rinsing water was still blue so absolutely rinse your hair for 20+ minutes. I will say though... I have lifted permanent black dye from my hair multiple times with Color Oops. It never goes back to the blonde you had before if thats your goal, but it will lift the color out. Arctic Foxs Transylvania however is the first dye I could not get out of my hair. It did lighten it a bit but for the most part my hair is still very green and purple. This stuff does smell like rotten eggs so prepare for that and it lingers on your hair for at least a day.

Disclaimer: Going to a professional is the preferred method when you’re talking about changing/ stripping color. But after tons of money spent and tons of salons and professionals tried, I have found that DIY is the method that works FOR ME. Is it right for you? I don’t know. I am impressed with this product and would recommend, but please understand it is not a miracle treatment. Color removal is often an arduous process that requires patience, strict adherence to directions and possible second or third applications are a reality in the color removing game. This is true for ANY COLOR REMOVAL PRODUCT I HAVE TRIED. Considering the above, Color Oops is my favorite in-home, DIY product so far. ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM: this product SMELLS REALLY BAD. VENTILATE— I used bathroom fan and a portable fan with bathroom door open. Don’t get it on your hands, clothes, or any objects—even if it gets on the countertop, use cleaner to wipe it up. ANYTHING this stuff touches will stink for days. Make sure you wear disposable gloves and plastic cap that comes in box. Throw away bottles, gloves, cap and tie up your trash bag tight when you’re done. Even use old clothes/ towel if you have them and throw those away, too (I just washed an old towel on highest setting to get smell out). For me, this is an ideal alternative to bleach. I can’t bleach my hair anymore than I already have, it’s too fragile. This product is way less damaging than bleach, but it will, however, open up pores to let the color out—so it will make it brittle until you condition it really well. Strand test is crucial—but understand your hair color will not change much if at all during strand test—color removal happens during the 15-20 minute rinse and 2 to 3 shampoos once you’re finished with the treatment. Application is quick (don’t drip it around! no metal clips! use plastic combs, clips, etc.) and only takes 20 minutes to process. Wear the plastic cap so the heat from your head keeps it nice and warm. The rinsing is the hard part. Rinse hot as you can handle for about 20 minutes to get the color out. The product opens the pores, the rinsing removes the color. Your hair will stink even after the rinsing, but the shampoo step removes the smell. Shampoo a couple times after use—USE A CLARIFYING SHAMPOO—moisturizing or color protecting shampoos will re-seal the pores and prevent further color removal during the process. I shampooed 3 times with a cheap, generic clarifying shampoo and lots of rinsing in between. This really got the last bits of color out for me. After I got as much color as possible out, I conditioned and used a protein treatment packet (follow directions—leaving protein on too long isn’t good for your hair) to seal and soften my hair after. I’m happy—BUT MY EXPECTATIONS ARE TEMPERED. I will have to do it again in 2 weeks to a month bc there’s still some red tones hanging around. Not much, but red is a very stubborn color. I have to wait 2 to 4 weeks bc my hair is too brittle to do any treatment that opens pores back to back. I have to heal it for a while with gentle, moisturizing shampoos and good conditioner before doing it again. Some people have healthy hair and don’t have to wait. BECAUSE MY HAIR IS ALREADY BLEACHED BEFORE COLOR REMOVER, I ALSO HAVE TO WAIT BEFORE ANY BLEACH/ OR DEVELOPER OR FOR AT LEAST 2 TO 4 WEEKS—so I have to wait to re-color unless I want to go dark again. I don’t. I just want to make it a nicer blonde. Meantime, bleach blonde with “ombre” roots it is. If you made it this far, you’re a champ. I wish you good hair forever.

I used to use this when I was young and tried lots of different hair colors. It worked, but it left my hair fried and orange. I'm not sure if they have a new formula but it worked great. I used a temporary hair color that didn't want to wash out. Remembering this product I decided to give it a try. It worked better than it did before. I followed the directions and used a clarifying shampoo to remove residue. Didn't dry out my hair. I did lose a big chunk of it which was not good but it is a harsh process so it makes sense. The smell isn't that bad but it did linger for a few days. Got my blonde hair color back. No complaints. I will definitely be using this again if I need it. Used 2 boxes for my long hair. --- EDIT: after a month, my hair still smells like the chemical used in this product. My hair is also a touch brassy now. Seems to be falling out more. However, this doesn't change my rating. It removed my color, I was aware there were risks. My hair looks healthy and I have my natural curls back. I'm sure it will recover once I stop processing it and coloring it.

Please consider the CON of the smell reviews seriously. While it worked great i was gagging and throwing up while applying it and couldn’t stop since half of my head was already covered. I should have just used a different darker semi-color shampoo vs using this product as a color close to your natural color which is darker isn’t worth this torture. Or just go to a salon if u got the money. The smell from my hair is making me sick. Definitely wear a good mask if you plan to use it and idk what would even help w these fumes later. This is very toxic, worse than resin, worse than those acrylic fake nails. But it does get the job done. But never again!

So the reason I think it has the bad reviews is because: 1. the smell 2. the brassy color that people are sometimes getting #1 I guess I can see that, it smells like rotten boiled eggs, but I’ve smelled worse on airplanes for much longer and tbh wasn’t surprised #2 If you read the directions and warnings in its entirety, you’ll see that highlighted/bleached hair will definitely need to go back to the salon for. This is because the bleach reacts differently than dye/toner to this product, so it will come out brassy instead. I had a few highlights that were very faded and leftover and could barely see this happened, but wasn’t surprised when it did. But again, only a warning to the highlighted hair folks. IF what happened to me happen to you, use this!!! My case: I went to a new stylist per a referral, and asked for “one shade darker”. I have naturally brown hair and had never all over dyed it. TLDR she dyed it black. I gave it a few days to come out but it never faded. I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it. My process: since I originally wanted “one shade darker” and still did, I did half/minimum the recommended time. So - 10 mins sitting, 15 min rinse/shampoo, 5 minute rinse/shampoo 3x. I also did a test on a strand, was SHOCKED with how well it worked (seeing the color brown again was all I wanted) and then did the whole thing same time all over again on my entire head. Total time was 2 hours. Hair Loss: this was my biggest worry outside of getting brassy hair and so I watched it like a hawk. Hindsight 20/20 there was no hair loss lol. In the moment it felt like there was, but that was because I was constantly running my fingers through my hair while rinsing, aka pulling out 1-2 strands each time LOL. This stopped completely after shampoo #2 and I stopped panicking for no reason Shampoo: I used a moisturizing shampoo. 10/10 recommend because my hair is so soft after washing it so much and your hair will appreciate it! Results: When I was done, I wasn’t completely sure it had done much, because you have to remember, you’re rinsing for so long that the color is SLOWLY coming out with the long rinsing and not dumping off your head like it does normally day 1 after the salon. But my rating!? 10/10. My hair is no longer weighed down by a pound of black hair dye AND curls up again like it used to. Also, it’s not fried from this product and should be even better than it was in a few days. So happy with this product and saved me money from going back to the salon!! If you’re nervous to try it, for $12 it’s so worth it! Thank you!!!!!
