This little switch is great - fanless
This little switch is great - fanless, quiet, and built like a tank. It runs the full on version of RouterOS (not the more stripped down SwitchOS) so you can actually make it do anything its full fledged router brothers can do, though all the stuff above layer 2 is done in CPU, and therefore won't be the fastest. But it's there if you really want to do it, and that includes up to all the crazy stuff like VPLS and ATM (pretty much unheard of at anything this price).I use mine for very light layer 3 duties but very heavy layer 2 duties - lots of VLAN trunking (tagging, not port aggregation) and stripping / tagging / translating of VLAN tags at high rates (bandwidth and pp/sec). Even at full tilt with multiple ports hitting max rates it doesn't break a sweat. It also has a fully compliant SNMP implementation. I am pleasantly surprised. The only drawback is RouterOS, which is pretty strange if you're not used to it. I've dealt with Cisco IOS (meh) and Juniper JunOS (awesome) plus I'm familiar with the HP and Dell interfaces; RouterOS is downright strange. But after a day I was able to get a handle on it, and after jotting down the quirks for future reference I'm having zero issues quickly integrating these things into my network. I would normally knock off a star for it because it's just THAT weird, but the rest of the switch's excellent qualities (silent, great build, rock solid performance) makes up for it.
