Great but default programming is wonky
The MikroTik wAP ax is actually a pretty solid little access point once you get it up and running. Performance has been good, stability has been good, and RouterOS gives you a ton of flexibility if you know your way around MikroTik gear. That said, the factory configuration is programmed a little funky. I initially thought the unit was defective because it wouldn’t respond through the normal setup methods like WinBox/web on the PoE port. Turns out the default firewall/config blocks management access on the PoE ether1 interface, which is confusing since that’s the port most people naturally plug into first for setup. Once I figured that out and adjusted the config, everything worked fine. Overall, good hardware and good performance, but MikroTik could definitely make the out-of-box experience less confusing.

Router + AP
5Ghz channel not seen on some devices... Only the 2.4 Found some postings online if you have this issue.... You need to manually set the 5ghz channel frequency. I'm not expert but i set it to 5745 as someone suggested. Seems to work now. I am using it as both a router and AP which is cool. I don't really need hard wired devices so seems like a good option. 300/300 internet. I'm havent played with crazy Firewall rules or VPNs etc. Have WAN in eth 1 and a little mini pc server in eth2. Everything came online pretty quick ~30 minutes and stumbling on this 5ghz channel issue. Plan to grab a mikrotek managed switch and plug into eth2 for a couple other hardwired devices but this works for now.

Excellent and enterprise grade
Excellent AP. Fast and excellent range. Works well outdoors too. I placed it on top of my shed to replace the older five year old MikroTik AP. Other reviewers might complain about having to manually set frequencies etc, but that’s part of the design of MikroTik. They have YouTube videos showing how to set them up, and yes you will need to manually set a few settings. If that’s a dealbreaker go to consumer grade equipment or pay extra for UniFi. I’ve had better reliability with my WAP AX than my older UniFi UAP AC since those always had buggy 802.1r fast roaming.

Mikrotik, fix this.
Everything worked out of the box EXCEPT 5Ghz Like the other reviewer, all my devices refused to connect to 5ghz (when both ssids were the same). I'm in the USA. I had to manually set frequency to 5180-5825 to get it to work. Mikrotik, fix this. It's really unacceptable that 5ghz is broken out of the box. I will update this review to 5 stars if this gets fixed. Other than this bug, it's a great product. UPDATE OCT 2025: This appears to be fixed now! Thing has been rock solid. I use it wall mounted inside and it's perfect!
