Although targeted to children, this book can be useful also as a base to explain this job to your adult friends without overcomplicating things.

My husband has been an air traffic controller for nearly 14 years and he has worked in several different facilities in the US and abroad. Air traffic is one of those "behind the scenes" kind of professions; one which most people know very little about. When people ask what my husband does for a living and we tell them he's an air traffic controller, we get all kinds of reactions ranging from confusion, to understanding, and even those who think the people on the ground with the orange sticks are controllers (the latter of which is quite annoying, by the way). To see a children's book about the air traffic profession was quite surprising to me and I quickly ordered it, having never seen anything of the like before. My children (ages 5 and under) know that their daddy "talks to airplanes" and "keeps airplanes safe" and whenever we see or hear an airplane, we wave to the plane and tell the pilot to "say hi to daddy for us!" But now we have an actual book that will help them and their friends and classmates (perhaps even their teachers!) understand exactly what he does and why it's important. I highly recommend this book. It's incredibly accurate, but it's short and concise at the same time. Even my husband was very impressed with it and he got a great laugh at the end when the main character, a young boy whose father is a controller, tells his class about how the people on the ground with the orange wands are not controllers. I plan on getting a copy of this book for my oldest child's class this coming school year and I will be recommending it to all of our controller friends. Great job, Jim McMannamy!

Most people should at least have the basic understanding of the different types of air traffic controllers. This book does just that... Even covers how air traffic controllers are not airport ground marshall's, hilarious... Very clever and nicely done.
