Giro Savant Road Bike Helmet

I have roses with this helmet three times now.Pros:- Comfortable- Easy to fit/adjust to my head- Decent looking- Typical Giro qualityCons:- Not ultra modern or stylish

Giro Savant helmetLet me say first that I've used a Bell Image helmet for decades, so that is my only basis for comparison. I purchased the Giro Savant in a medium size based on the Giro sizing chart and it fits well and comfortably, even though I'm near the small end of the range for that size. The knob-adjustable head strap is a distinct improvement over the Bell and helps to hold the helmet securely on the head. The chin strap arrangement seems to follow modern practice, but is not nearly as elegant as the old Bell, whose straps lay flush with the sides of the head, and had an elegantly simple snap closure under one ear. The Giro's straps twist as they pass through the fitting below the ear on each side and therefore are not completely flush with the sides of the head, although I don't find it uncomfortable. The straps are a bit fiddly to adjust, but once done, they seem to stay put. That the Giro is available in hi-viz yellow (like the Bell) and with reflective side strips may help to avoid vehicular altercations (I don't understand the suicidal fad for black bicycles and accessories.)My first ride with the Savant was on a cool (59 deg F) summer morning with low dew point and I immediately noticed the improved airflow over the scalp, as compared to the Bell. The second thing that I noticed as I reached speed was markedly increased wind noise around the ears. I don't know whether the noise is due to the twisted straps, the increased airflow through the helmet, or the more pronounced notch above the ears, but it is louder than the Bell. The differences that I cite seem typical of most modern helmets that I've observed so perhaps the noise is the price of better fit and airflow, and my only concern is that it may mask the sound of approaching traffic, children or dogs. As I've become accustomed to the sound, it is not objectionable. The Giro is comfortable to wear and remained so for the duration of my ride (about 1hr, 45 min.), without shifting around or pressure points. On my second ride of similar length but higher temperature and humidity, the Giro Savant disappeared from my consciousness - a good thing.I used the Giro Savant almost daily for about two months and found it to be everything that I expected until an unknown event occurred and I apparently hit the pavement. I say unknown because I suffered a concussion and blank memory for about 20 minutes until I returned to my home, unaware how I arrived. A review of my injuries and those of the bike, clothes and helmet suggested that I landed on my back and struck the back of my head. The only external evidence on the Savant was a blunted point and slight scratching at the rear. Inside the Savant showed hairline cracking of the rigid foam structure at several places surrounding the presumed point of impact. There was no visible evidence of injury to my head, suggesting that my concussion resulted from internal impact of my brain with the skull. I have no way to know how the performance of the Giro Savant might compare to other helmets in this circumstance and I don't intend to repeat the experiment, but the Giro remained intact, as did my head, if not uninjured (the 20 minutes remain lost). I will buy another Giro Savant.

Good helmet, great fit and look.

Love this helmet. Comfortable. Light. And yellow color great for safety - very visible to vehicles.Easy to adjust fit with knob in back; can easily loosen or tighten even while riding. Easy adjustment important to me given range of things I wear under helmet - doo rag, baclava, or brimmed hat depending on time of year / temperature.Re: helmet color and safety: I average more than 5000 miles riding per year and see a lot of other cyclists out on the road - the two helmet colors that are most visible to me are orange and yellow.Prior to owning this helmet, I felt a need to wear jerseys / vests / jackets with at least some fluorescent yellow to enhance my visibility. With this yellow helmet (along with a blinking red light hooked on my rear saddle bag and brightly colored shoes), I feel like I can choose the rest of my cycling kit (jersey and shorts) without regard to effect of their color on my visibility and safety—Update sept 2019 - this helmet saved my life. I had a bad bike accident. Going 25 mph, caught front tire in a “hidden” crack in road shoulder - and went flying. Landed hard on left side of head and body from shoulder down to ankle. Four broken ribs, road rash up and down left side , massive hip hematoma with liter of blood drained in ER. But head ok. Helmet dented in multiple places on left side but no head damage / no concussion systems. Thank you, Giro

Well made brand and model helmet. The weight and comfort were great and the dial in the back makes it easy to adjust the tightness. I live in a very hot and humid climate and still find this helmet to provide sufficient airflow. I have had this helmet for several years now and the quality has endured without deteriorating. As with anything, take care of your gear and it will take care of you.

I have spent about 80 hours researching and learning about bicycle helmets. I have read Amazon's customer reviews, studied several consumer testing criteria, and then I have personally visited several sporting stores. My primary goal is to protect my head at all cost by practicing safety measures. However, I soon learned that I do not have control over motorists; especially distracted ones. After reading one review that underscored that a cyclist had a head crash, because a distracted motorist was texting, when she allegedly hit him off his bike; then I realized that I needed a helmet that is above the entry level price point.I also read that the more expensive helmets have to do with manufacturers trying to recoup their ROI; since they put up front bloated financial endorsements and marketing campaigns. My research led me to the $100 dollar range for a decent helmet that has the features that I wanted. I zeroed in on this helmet, because of its sex appeal, color, and the reviews that it was getting. The strap was the only outstanding issue that caused me to be hesitant. I concluded that I was going to try this helmet.I do not have any problem with the straps. The nylon material stays flat against my face, easily adjustable, and then the helmet feels great. The helmet is comfortable, and it is light on my head. I say that the straps are non-factors. The safety features are adequate, price is right, easily adjustable, stylish and sexy, and then it doesn't break the bank.This is a winner...
