A reviewer says the AUTO on/off does NOT work. Is it a defective unit or does this work? This is a key feature for me.

The auto on/off works just fine on both of my Dayton SUB-1200 subs. Once a low frequency signal is sent through the LFE into the sub it turns on. They do seems to turn back off a little too soon but its not too bad. I would have to say it seems like a couple minutes of no audio they turn off.

How does this sub woofer sound with music - I'm not interested in "booming" home theater explosions, but rather a clear, well-defined bass?

I'm a boomer using this sub with a 90's vintage Yamaha 45w/ch receiver (I specifically chose this sub because of how easy it is to hook up to a vintage amp) and I find I can adjust it with the gain control of the back of the sub to make it work with whatever kind of music I happen to be playing. I turn it up just a little past half way for pop and hip hop, and just a little less on the gain and crossover for rock and jazz. I like the way my system (Yamaha RX-360, Rotel TT with Shure cartridge, and Boston Acoustics A-100 floor standing speakers) sounds with it so much I think it would probably cost at least twice as much to replace it with a better speaker.

Is the woofer on the bottom or the front. The pictures show the woofer on the front, but the description says, "downward firing".

The woofer fires to the front. It's the port that is downward firing.

My music listening room is (i think) 10x12 feet. how is this sub for music listening? should i opt for something like the sub-1000 instead?

The 1200 will be more than adequate for that room size. In fact you will probably not even get close to turning it up full tilt. I run mine between 1/2 and 3/4 Gain. With the frequency around 90hz depending on what im listening to music wise or watching video wise. Im quite sure my neighbors in the house next door can here my sub-woofer at times. So if you are in a condo or apt, you will have the gain turned down much more. Or if maybe you dont give a hoot, its a sure thing you will get a knock on the door and it might be the police (been there done that-LOL)
