I have used it for calves. Works great. Shape is perfect.

should this be used for scar tissue after total knee replacment

I would check with my doctor or physical therapist before using. The PT people use this on my muscles. I see them for knee and after back surgery. I know it works on my muscles

is this hollow, or a solid heavy piece?

It's a solid piece of aluminum and aluminum is much lighter than steel. So it's solid but not heavy. If you're still confused, consider the weight of aluminum pots and pans versus stainless steel pots and pans or cutlery. Aluminum (in my opinion) is the perfect material of choice for this particular design. It's smaller and fits in the palm of your hand, while also being thicker than other IASTM designs, which therefore provides for a much better grip than a stanless steel version. A thicker stainless steel version would be way to heavy and cumbersome, especially for smaller (and weaker) practictioners.
