Can you turn it on and off?

Unfortunately, no. When you pull a plastic strip out the battery is activated, and in order for it to stop you need to remove the back cover ( very easy) and remove the battery. The good news is the battery life is about 3 months. Roy

Is this the same kitty on the website with a softer body and a moving tale? The old version was harder and the tail doesn't move

I have the old version - harder kitty & the tail doesn't move until I move it which has a wire inside it. I don't know what the newer one looks like!

Do I have to cut out the patch of "fur" covering her battery in order to inset one?

No you don’t need to cut the fur. Move it aside and you can pull the battery cover off to replace the battery.

Received ours today, not very happy with it and it is not breathing, sheds awful. doa. we removed the red tag, any suggestions for it to breath?

I returned mine a long time ago. I don't think it is supposed to breathe. Is it advertised as breathing ? Mine didn't shed though. I had hoped it would be soft. Not have a hard body.
