What's the difference between the "*new* contour" and "shape shift" models?

There has been an upgrade to the design with the plug and play port on the side and the bite valve also. There is also a handle to make it easier for filling.

Will this work with a Dakine Hot Laps 5L pack with 2L lumbar hydration pack inside?

The 2L vertical reservoir will not work with the Dakine Hot Laps 5L pack. It will only accomodate a lumbar reservoir which only comes in the 1.5L size.

Is the contour one designed to be worn around your lower back? Do either of these keep water cold?

This reservoir is designed to be used in a lumbar pack. To keep your water colder longer you can put some water (about 1/5) in the reservoir and leave in the freezer overnight.
